Albemarle is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. Albemarle is the smallest of the five towns in Alamance County and it has the second-lowest population density of all the Towns in Alamance County. It is also one of the most rural areas in Alamance County with only 1% of its residents living more than 50 miles from any major city or town. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Albemarle Township were farmers who came overland from Maryland and Virginia during the early 1800s. In 1806, John Sevier purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land which he named "Albemarle" for his brother-in-law, Lord Baltimore. Sevier had been granted a license by Governor Thomas Moore to settle a colony on Roanoke Island but never completed his journey because of illness. In 1824, General James Boggs founded another group of colonists at what is now White Sulphur Springs Road (now Old Hwy 9). These settlers began construction on a permanent settlement which they called "Fayetteville". The village was established on December 16, 1824 by Rev. Jno. Auld and others under authority given them by Gov. Moore through an act entitled "An Act For Establishing Fayetteville." The first store was built on Main Street within two years and within two years after that white goods alone were being sold from this store with prices ranging from $2-$5 per week! By 1830 there were six stores open along High Street including three owned by men: Drury & Holcombe; Wigglesworth & Howes; and Gillett Brothers! There were also ten families residing in Fayetteville when it became known as "Albemarle". In 1830 Captain James Denton made landfall at Alben's Inlet and discovered saltpeter mining operations going on there so he decided to move his manufacturing concerns ashore adjacent to Albemarle River where he started producing saltpeter candles and other goods such as rope and mill clothings before moving back inland again about 1840 when production stopped due to competition from new mines nearby. He also started upriveraching small ferry service between Fayetteville Ferry Landing downstream on High Street (now US 421) across Alben's Inlet then turning around upstream onto present day Whiteship Road for transportation purposes until about 1860 when mail service replaced ferries as general transport methods into/out of Albemarle so ferry services ceased operations completely about 1870 or so! During this time period several churches were built including First Baptist Church which still stands today inside Alben's Inlet State Park east side near US 421 while Second Baptist Church moved southward across High Street some time ago into what is now Elmwood Drive outside old Lowndes Mills shopping center just past Walnut Creek Rd intersection
Albemarle was founded in 1749 by Captain John Smith as a trading post on the banks of the Albemarle River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1775 it had become an important commercial center with its own courthouse and jail. In 1812, Albemarle became part of the United States of America.
