Albemarle is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2000 census. Albemarle is the third-largest town in Gaston County and home to the Albemarle High School District. In addition to Albemarle, neighboring communities include Pigeon Forge and Greeneville. The first settler in what is now Albemarle was Nathaniel Gorham who arrived in 1774 from Augusta, Georgia with his family. Gorham's brother-in-law John Wise founded a small community on the side of a mountain near where modern day Albemarle stands. Wise's settlement was known as "Newbern." Others familiar with this area include James Robertson (1792-1872), who built a cabin onpresent day Mount Claremont; John Horry (18th century); and Moselton Smith (19th century). In 1827 David Dodds platted what became present day Gastonia and named it after his friend General Richard Seddon who had fought in Mexico City during the Mexican– American War. Dodds donated land for an public school which opened its doors to students on November 1, 1828. This event marked the beginning of education in what is now Gastonia County. When roads were improved by Governor Tryon throughout northern North Carolina during the 1830s many families migrated westward into Cumberland County due to new opportunities for farmland and industry along the Catawba River valley east of Charlotte . Some of these families established themselves at what becameknown as "Albemarle" including those from Gorham's Village which resided around current dayMount Claremont until about 1830 when they left for good because there was no more fertile ground available within their boundaries or close toby markets that could support them economically . There are still descendants of these early settlers living today at Albemarlie High School located just south of downtown while others have relocated further west where conditions have been more favorable such as Newtonville within Gastonia County limits
