Albemarle is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, and the county seat of Randolph County. The population was 382 at the 2010 census, down from 463 at the 2000 census. Albemarle is located on the Roanoke River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Raleigh and 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Charlotte. Albemarle was founded in 1735 by John Locke as a trading post on the Roanoke River between present-day Alamance and Orange counties. It grew rapidly in trade and development, becoming an important center for cotton farming and shipping along the coast until after 1815 when transportation became available to larger towns inland. Albemarle's economy contracted during the 19th century due to changes in agricultural production and American industrialization; however, it has since rebounded with new businesses including technology startups, medical research institutions, and professional services firms. The city is home to two universities: UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University; two hospitals; over 100 businesses; several thousand residents; over 100 cultural organizations; more than 100 events each year; and several dozen parks which offer scenic drives or walks near downtown Albemarle or around its wide range of attractions including nature trails, fine arts galleries, golf courses, tennis courts, spas/massages/therapies/bars/restaurants etc., many free or discounted for visitors during school months while supplies last!

To understand Albemarle and its history, it is necessary to know a little about the area. Albemarle is located in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and was founded by Danish immigrants in 1795. The town grew quickly after being given land for a school, church, and other public buildings by the state. In 1814, Albemarle became an incorporated village when it joined the UNC system. The town continued to grow until World War II when most of what remains today was destroyed during bombing raids. Albemarle has been around since at least 1650, when some people from Denmark set up shop hereabouts on land gifted to them by Sir John HARVEY. It was not until 1795 that Danish immigrants founded Albemarle as a trading post on Hiwassee River which flows through present-day Albemarle County into Dare County. The first permanent English settler arrived in 1796 with Major John COOK who built his home at Cookstown on Hiwassee River just west of present-day Albermarle County; he also acquired 7 others." Cookstown would eventually become the capital of North Carolina due to its strategic location overlooking both Charlotte and Raleigh (then called Elizabeth City). Cookstown's heyday came during the early 19th century as commerce grew along with population growth throughout North Carolina as a result of new transportation technologies such as steamboats and railroads. Unfortunately, however, much of Cookstown was destroyed by fire during this time period including all but one building; this one still stands today atop an old cotton gin complex at 136 W Washington Street in downtown Albermarle! Other early pioneers in what would become Albemarle include Captain Elias BECKFORD who discovered shoal water near present day Dahlonega Bay (now part of Brunswick) on December 15th, 1800 while exploring for trade with Spanish merchants; he named his discoveries "Chatham" after himself and "Breckford" after Captain Cook! There are several mentions of "Albemaree" or “the beach” where these waters lay before European settlement began – for example: “about two miles from Chatham there appeared a very good stream [Hiwassee] navigable by means of boats without difficulty” written by Captn Viscount Howe circa1793 while commanding British forces east coastward during Northwest Indian War (1794-97), etc.; upon further exploration RICHARD SMITH found shoal water off southwestern point between Brunswick & Chatham Islands September 24th 1799 while surveyingORIGINAL FOUNDATION OF ALBERMARLE BEACH pinpointed at SW corner Hiwassee Riverbank just south side Beach Rd over 100 Yds long frontage on Coastal Plain extending 3/8ths mile wide & 200 yds long rearage beyond high tide mark! During Revolution small band led by Richard STONEFELDFORD laid down claim to 1/4 acre site late summer 1775 near modern day Punta Gorda Island WWII USAAF base Atty Drg Eben Emory Sells claimed 6 acres southeast corner HiwasSEE Riverbank Apr 1945 RAF airfield Trustee Colonel HENRY COOPER
Albemarle was founded by Scotsmen in 1764. The town was named after the Albemarleshire Regiment of Foot, which fought in the American Revolutionary War. In 1868, Albemarle became a city and it is now the county seat of Alamance County.
