Albemarle is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Durham County and part of the Chapel Hill–Durham metropolitan area. Albemarle was founded by colonists from Virginia in 1712 as a trading post on the Alnwick Fork of the Yadkin River. The land that now Albemarle was first surveyed and sold to English settlers in 1719 by John Randolph and James Moore. In 1727, General William Howe divided this territory with Alamance and Gaston counties into two districts for taxation: one including Albemarle, which became known as District 3A; and another including Halifax County (now part of Wake Forest), which became known as District 2B. In 1868, after construction of the Eastern Railroad through Durham County ensued, William Denny erected a public house here on what is now Main Street called "Denny's Tavern". This served as the center for business within town until it closed its doors in 1911 when wire services came to be located here instead on Pine Street near Duke University's main campus. In 1915-16 Albemarle had 1 grocery store; 5 pharmacies; 4 banks; 9 saloons/restaurants; 7 lumberyards/stores; 11 houses (including 10 frame homes) ; 2 churches (Anglican and Methodist); 1 doctorate degree granting institution - UNC Chapel Hill (the School of Medicine ); 1 school children's play ground ; 2 parks - One Recreational Park opened in 1922 named after Dr. George Washington Carver (later renamed Central Park South ); 1 ice rink built 1935-36 which remain open today.; After World War II there were new housing developments such as Cedar Pointe Estates built along Interstate 95 outside town limits while some older properties were used for military bases like Camp Elliott during World War II then abandoned again like many other places during that time period. However things started to change once again starting around 1980 when Stroudsburg real estate developers bought most of downtown for development into office complexes with little or no input from anyone interested in keeping Albemarle residential or agricultural based agriculture continued well into recent years but has slowly begun to die down over time
The Albemarle County seat is located in the town of Albemarle, North Carolina. The county was formed on April 30, 1819 from portions of Orange and Dare counties. It was named for General James Fenton, who fought in the American Revolution.
