Albemarle, North Carolina is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,928 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Albemarle is located on the Yadkin River and has a total area of 71 square miles (188 km2). The town was founded in 1796 by Colonel Robert Ewell and his family as an outpost on the Yadkin River to provide security for their plantation holdings in what is now Gaston County. Albemarle grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War due to its importance as a transportation hub for goods moving between North Carolina and Virginia. In 1843, Colonel Ewell donated land to build a school and church in honor of his wife Lucy. The first school building was dedicated on December 12, 1843. In 1865, Albemarle became an incorporated village when it merged with nearby Lincolnton. In 1886, Albemarle hosted the first interstate fair in South Carolina when it hosted the Newbern Agricultural Fair. The fair drew many visitors from all over South Carolina and northeastern Virginia who used Albemarlie's port facilities to dock their vessels before going ashore to trade goods with local farmers and merchants. Albemarle experienced significant growth during World War II due to its strategic location as both a shipping point for materiel moving into England through Halifax Harbour and also as an airhead for Allied bombers attacking German targets across southern Germany and northern Austria. During World War II, scientists from UNC Chapel Hill developed radar equipment at Allemand's Signal Corps Research Laboratory which helped improve Allied fighter aircraft design including those that would become known as "the Boeing Bombers." The original land grant for Albemarle County included 3 square miles (8 km2) along the Yadkin River; it grew rapidly because OFranching crops like tobacco and rice allowed colonists access to valuable resources near what is today’s Asheville suburb of Weaverville.
