In 1916, when World War I began, Yonkers became one of four towns located within 100 miles of Gotham City for military personnel who were stationed at Fort Orange near Kingston. During World War II most residents decided not to take up arms against Nazi Germany because they were worried about retaliation or resettlement by American forces should war break out; however some did relocate to other parts of New York or even Pennsylvania due to rationing measures.
