Yonkers is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 52,521 at the 2010 census. Yonkers is one of five towns in the county and the only one located within the official borders of New York City. It is bordered by Clinton to the north, Paramus to the east, and Morrisania to the south. The town's name is derived from an Iroquois word meaning "high ground." The first European settlers arrived in 1714 as part of settlements around what are now Yonkers and White Plains. They named their new village after Mount Hope on Long Island which they saw from their home on High Street in Southwick. In 1718, Yanickens resident Nicholas Saroyan built a Tavern on Park Row which served as a social center for early settlers who were busier than those living near Kingston or Nyack. One reason for this increased activity was access to water resources that became very important with growing populations downtown – especially because two ponds lay just outside of town limits at Culp Creek and Lake George – plus easy transportation by horses and carts across country roads. In 1792, when New York statehood became effective, Yonkers had 7 residents; 3 men (Nicholas Saroyan, Samuel Morse Sr., John Morse) and 4 women (Betsy Parsons, Martha Washington Douglass). On July 16th following its admission into statehood as a Town of Johnsonstown (population: 5), Yonkers voted 6-1 against incorporating with other villages within Westchester County because it felt that doing so would have diluted its power and authority given its small size relative to larger municipalities like Farmingdale or Scarsdale. Because of this vote it remained an unincorporated community until 1834 when it joined forces with other towns within Westchester County to form New Rochelle Township (population: 85), becoming an all-village township under state law effective that year. When rat poison fever hit western New York during the 1830s there was much concern about possible outbreaks along Route 66 where traders traveled between Albany/Schenectady/Troy and points further west because of available food supplies coming down through Pennsylvania via Millville Pike etc., but no reports emerged indicating any widespread impact beyond localities such as Yonkers; however some areas did see significant declines in populations due primarily to disease control measures put into place including mass vaccination campaigns carried out throughout central & eastern NY during that time period . In 1848 village status was restored for Yonkers when Johnsonstown merged with other villages nearby including Valhalla - both communities still maintain village status today though Valhalla has since been annexed by neighboring Kingwood Village . back then there were special taxes levied ONLY ON YONKERS TRADE ACCOUNTS not general property tax like now

On July 1, 1898, Yonkers became a full-fledged city under Mayor John Fenton with 3rd Ward Alderman Alfred Vinal providing leadership and direction for what would become one of America's most vibrant metropolises with over 100 neighborhoods within its boundaries!
