The early history of Yonkers can be traced back to 1614 when settlers named Piscataway moved into what is now known as Northdown Road. They had been ordered by King James I of England to clear land for new townships that he was developing around his NEW YORK CITY Plantation on Long Island Sound. Three years earlier, English forces had invadedand conquered New Netherland and drove out all but about 10 Native American tribes before finally settling in what is now Westchester County. Shortly after arriving in America, these Protestant white men founded a town called Newton on opposite sides of the river where they built homes and stores using materials available at their nearby plantations including chestnut trees that were being grown for export to Great Britain at this time. After becoming established near Kingston, New York (now Albany), they changed their name to Yonkers because it sounded more like an English word than Newton which probably originated with some local farmers who thought it would be easier to remember than Newton School House which was also called Nethertowne Hall according to one source In 1795, when George Washington became President of the United States, he appointed Daniel Carroll as Deputy Quartermaster General with responsibility for issuing goods and services needed by Army troops garrisoned along both sides of the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and Maryland Heights including parts of modern-day Yonkers and Scarsdale township just north-west of Albany Carroll developed what is now known as Carrol's Hill Top Road which led down from present-day Northdown Road past present-day South Street Settlement towards present day White Plains Creek where it crossed under Westchester Avenue just south of present day Middletown Township line before continuing downriver pastpresent day Scarsdale creek junction into what is now WesternScarsdale Township . This route still forms partofNY 23rd St/Route 11
