Yonkers is a small city in New York State, located on the border of Yonkers and Putnam counties. The population was 11,613 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Westchester County. The first Europeans to visit Yonkers were Dutch traders in 1614–1615. They named it Nieuw Amsterdam, which means "New Amsterdam". The English renamed it Newburgh after they took control of Manhattan from the Dutch in 1664. In 1792, when Newburgh became part of Albany County, Yonkers joined with other towns in that county to form the new town of Troy (and later Yonkers). The name "Yonker" was first used for village status in 1824. In 1857, John Duryea built a sawmill and gristmill on what is now Fulton Street nearpresent-day Columbia University; this mill became one of the largest employers in Yonkers at that time and remain so today. A post office called Yonkers was established at this site on October 3, 1857, and remained open until December 1, 1865. On November 10th 1870 Congressman James Kapp introduced HJR 316 (later S 535), which would have changed most aspects of local government within Westchester County; however he failed to get enough support to pass through Congress due to strong opposition by powerful influential politicians in Albany County who wanted more power over their own citizens there! However shortly thereafter both houses passed an act increasing taxes/federal funding for programs like education etc., effectively ending local self-government there forever though some forms continued until around 1975 or so when various decisions were made by state officials about how best all these functions should be run: those were eventually absorbed into larger statewide entities such as NYGov even though many people still consider themselves “yonkerians” inside their own neighborhoods outside of government control!
