The river forms most of its boundaries downtown; westward it bends to form avenues such as Jericho Turnpike and Main Street before receding into a rural landscape characterized by rolling hills and agricultural land near hamlets like Glens Falls and Oneonta. Although originally settled primarily by Dutch immigrants who mined coal within sight of present-day Yonkers, English settlers soon followed with their cattle ranches and tanneries until there were more than 5,000 English residents living in what is now Yonkers by 1800. At first these settlers built modest wooden homes around large square fires which they called "pioneers' camps". Yonkers, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 22,316 at the 2010 census. Yonkers is located on the south side of the Hudson River and is part of the New York City metropolitan area. It has been a center for manufacturing and commerce since its founding in 1784 as a small farming community near modern-day Albany. The town's first settlers arrived from England in 1624 with only three families. The name Yonkers comes from one of their original leaders, Johnathanontowne or Jonathanondowan (or Jonekens). A survey of business properties in 1821 shows that more than half of all businesses in Albany were within five miles of downtown; this included most of the land around present-day Broadway and State Street (then called "Queen's Road"). Yonkers was founded in 1785 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French Huguenot immigrant. The town developed rapidly due to its location on the Hudson River, and in 1814 it became the capital of New York State. In 1865, Yonkers became part of the new city of New York City.
