It is part of the Yonkers-South Syracuse-East Aurora, NY micropolitan area. Yonkers is located on the western edge of upstate New York, bordered by Oneida County to the north and east and Westchester County to the south. The first settlers in what is now Yonkers originated from eastern Suffolk County in 1614. They arrived on horseback and founded a tiny hamlet called East Hampton on Long Island Sound known today as Bethpage Village. In 1784, George Washington surveyed and laid out a new township for Upper Manhattan called Westphalia (today's Yonkers). The name was changed to Yonker in 1812 when it became clear that the original community sat too close to Albany for its own good. The early years of this century were difficult for many residents due to political unrest surrounding Buffalo’s annexation into New York City following the Civil War. But with industrialization came prosperity for many businesses and families within town who reinvested their profits back into their communities: Cement companies such as Lafarge; steelmakers like Bethlehem Steel; bankers like J.P Morgan & Co.; doctors like Mount Sinai Hospital; newspapers such as The New Yorker and The Tribune; breweries such as Pabst Brewing Company and Miller Brewing Company;and elected officials including Ulysses S Grant, Grover Cleveland and Adlai Stevenson II

Yonkers is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 41,916 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Yonkers was first settled in 1788 as a small hamlet on the eastern border of what is now Westchester County. The name derived from Old English yonder meaning "yonder" and hir meaning "place." In 1814, the area became part of the newly created village of Sleepy Hollow and was named for General Israel Putnam's home at Sleepy Hollow Lake in that year. In 1868, Yonkers joined with other towns along the Mohawk River to form the new city of Rochester. At first, most residents chose to remain within their own communities but after two years they voted to secede and form their own city under Mayor Augustus Brawley (1869-75). In 1875, Rochester annexed Yonkers but again declined to give up its autonomy; instead it formed an alliance with Syracuse and formed what is now known as the Northeast Regional District. In 1903, Yonkers merged with neighboring town Waterford to form a single municipality which would later be designated as Westchester County’s largest incorporated municipality by then-County Executive James Fenton (1912-27). That same year also saw another major change when it became apparent that much needed new housing development was not forthcoming within existing municipalities boundaries; so Fenton convened a special committee chaired by himself to study why this was so and recommended that all municipalities within westchester county amalgamate into one entity – which happened on July 1st 1912. This unprecedented event resulted in some high profile names joining forces with Hiram Sibley & Sons – such as Edison Electric Institute president Samuel Inslee – who were associated with developing Monroeville Mall in downtown Yonkers while also certain members of both houses including future Governor Franklin D Roosevelt served on its board during its early years. By 1938 it had grown sufficiently large enough that it elected its own mayor through referenda rather than being subject to continued mayoral control by department heads or evenMayor James Meehan (1920-38) whose political power base lay outside his municipal borders due primarily to his close relationship with Governor Ahmet Cagaptay (1928-32). After years during which zoning regulations were changed without public input or comment due solely to political pressure from developers see an endnuigation process led by then Controller John Doherty effective January 1st 1984 when all zoning regulations were rewritten based upon community consultation pursuant TO article 3 section 6 OF THE ONTARIO ZONING ACT 1984 !!! Finally we have become “The Town of yonks”
