Yonkers has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than one hundred years and the first permanent European settlement in what is now Yonkers was founded in 1624 by Dutch colonists as a trading post on the Hudson River. In 1764, George Washington's Headquarters were located here for several months while he was commandant of Fort George Washington on Manhattan Island during the American Revolution. During World War I, much of Yonkers was destroyed by fire; however, most of it rebuilt and remains an important commercial center today. The town began to prosper after oil drilling became available in nearby Utica and Mohawk Rivers in 1949-1950 due to discoveries made at Plattsburgh Bayou near Buffalo and Niagara Falls. With rapid growth came increased development including new schools, businesses and homes which led to increased traffic congestion along Main Street which created problems for planners who could not keep up with demand. In 1977–1978 Mayor John Lindsay ordered that all new housing developments be built either east or west of Main Street because he felt that this would alleviate some of the traffic congestion problem but littleaction followed until 2001 when a plan called "Thegrand renewal"was approved by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani which included widening Main Street from its current width of only 38 feet (12 m) to 50 feet (16 m) wide with narrower streets perpendicular thereto so as to create more open space within the municipality limitsideal for shopping malls and other large commercial buildings; however no action was taken until 2006 when another plan called "Newyork 2040"wasapproved by Mayor Michael Bloomberg whereby additional lanes will be added to Main Street between Third Avenue South and Fifth Avenue North making it possible for even more traffic congestion on this important artery
The town of Yonkers, New York was founded in 1714 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The name is derived from the Iroquois word yonkonkon, meaning "hollow place." The first settler in Yonkers was Jonas Griggs. In 1772, the town was renamed to honor General George Washington. In 1836, the town became part of New York City.
