In 1824, a business man named Solomon Heaps opened a firearms dealership in what is now known as Heaps-Goodrich Plaza in Yonkers. This store became one of the most important in town and played an important role in helping to develop gun culture in New York State. In 1875, Heaps’ son-in-law, Charles Goodrich, bought out his dad’s share in the business and started Goodrich & Heaps Guns “in honor of his father who had been such an influential factor in our community during its earliest years” (MosesParentsHistoryPage). Goodrich would later become Mayor of Yonkers from 1934-1938 and continue to play an important role in town life until his death in 1966. Gun sights continued to be popular throughout much of the twentieth century; however, they began appearing more frequently on pistols than rifles after World War II due to advances in manufacturing technology. By 1969, pistols were making up almost 60% of all handgun sales nationally (Glock USA). Yonkers is one of the most populous cities in Upstate New York and is also home to the University at Albany and John Jay College of CriminalJustice. Yonkers has been a center for education, trade and commerce since its founding in 1785 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a mill town on the Mohawk River. The area now known as Yonkers was part of what were then called Westchester County; it became an incorporated city on November 1, 1867. The early history of Yonkers can be traced back to 1785 when Scots-Irish immigrants settled in what is now downtown Yonkers after fleeing British colonial rule in Ireland. They began trading goods with local Native Americans and bought land from them for development into a mill town known as "Niskayuna". In 1814, Niskayuna merged with neighboring Schenectady to form what would become the first municipal corporation in upstate New York. The incorporation of Yonker happened despite protests by some citizens who saw their small community framed within larger towns that were growing rapidly around them. In 1827, two years after becoming an incorporated city, Yonkers enacted its first law – an ordinance forbidding saloons and gambling dens within its limits. This prohibition helped prevent liquor traffic from disruptive business patterns that had arisen along the Mohawk River elsewhere in Upstate New York during this period. Over time, other similar ordinances were passed which regulated various aspects of life inside and outside of City Hall including prostitution; public nudity; divorce ; immigration ; labor disputes ; animal husbandry ; insurance investigations ;and even food inspection laws! Despite these regulations being put into place to protect residents' rights and interests (and sometimes resulting in humorous headlines like "City Limits: No Gambling"), crime continued to skyrocket throughout much of this period thanks largely to unchecked alcohol consumption by men seeking adventure on horseback or by men working long hours away from family seeking out opportunity! In 1875, following passage of state legislation legalizing liquor sales statewide (the product had previously been illegal under state law), Mayor James Phelan convinced City Council to appropriate $10 thousand towards construction of a new firehall/distillery complex adjacent to City Hall which would serve as both civic center and commercial district for the burgeoning cityscape around it! This building – located today at 222 Main Street – became known as "Phelan's Park." The opening day for business was June 9th ensuing year with over 150 merchants present! By 1886, however, Prohibition had arrived in America shores through passage of Ulysses S Grant's Executive Order 9102 making all alcoholic beverages prohibited nationwide on October 15th!! In response numerous businesses closed their doors across northeast NY due primarily to economic hardship caused by federally mandated regulation!!! Many residents still refuse To forget about Mayor Phelan who led our city through some tough times.....
