In 1969, two gunmen gunned down five policemen working at a traffic stop outside of an ice cream parlor. In 1970, two gunmen entered the office of local newspaper publisher John McNamara with intent to kill him when they were thwarted by employees who barricaded themselves inside the building.

Yonkers is the most populous community in Westchester County and one of the seven cities that make up the town of Yonkers on Long Island. It is bordered by Pelham to the south, Ithaca to the east, Oneonta to the north, and Smithtown to the west. The first known settlement in present-day Yonkers was founded by Dutch colonists in 1614 as Schodehagen Vlyck Township. In 1795, it became part of Albany County when Upper Manhattan was created from portions of Columbia County and Ulster County. The area now called Yonkers was part of Mohawk Township until 1812 when it became part of Newburgh Township independent from Mohawk Village. During its early years, Yonkers had a small population due to its isolated location and lack of transportation options; however, with development over time this has changed with easier access to both jobs and education opportunities nearby. The first settler in what would become current-day Yonkers was Jacob Van der Velde who arrived in 1614 on his way from Amsterdam back home after purchasing land from our great king William III along with his wife's brother Cornelis Staalmannsvelt (the future James Monroe). van der Velde built a cabin near present day Uniondale Road and named it “Haven’tinga” (now known as Old Town) after his purchase land thereabouts. By 1647 he had erected a more substantial building known today as “Hagia Sophia” or simply “The House” which still stands today inside Haven'tinga Park near where Uniondale Road meets Interstate 90E just east of downtown Yonker proper. A year later he acquired additional property northeastward along Orange Avenue between what is now Third Avenue/Route 9A (now First Avenue) and Fourth Street/Route 202 before finally settling down at what would become current-day South Ferry Road/Route 9A about two miles southeast of modern downtown Yonkers proper on some 400 acres purchased from Absalom Soelden (of Saybrook Farms fame). This parcel included much valuable forested real estate including extensive tracts contiguous with Canarsie Creek which flows through present day North Syracuse within easy driving distance for those days – making South FerryRoad an ideal spot for agricultural production such as haystacks etcetera subject only incidentally heretofore unknown or unimagined hereinabouts! In 1650 Abraham Ortelius charted what are now Route 9A/South Ferry Road (and other areas adjoining it) while surveying lands lying east–west across Canarsie Creek valley northwestward thenceforth comprising parts now contained within RWTH Aachen University Campus bounds; see map attached….. Ortelius gave this area same name as town site located therein….Today these boundaries remain unchanged except for change involved in acquisition & annexation by adjacent municipalities since then……………………………………… As aforesaid tract situated east–west across Canarsie Creek Valley Northwestward thenceforth comprising parts now contained within RWTH Aachen University Campus bounds;see map attached….. Ortelius gave this area same name as town site located therein….Today these boundaries remain unchanged except for change involved in acquisition & annexation by adjacent municipalities since then………………………………………It should be noted that Abraham Ortelius did not actually survey actual village site but merely recorded approximate location thereof based upon information available at that time………………………………………..
