A detachment of riflemen from Company K of this regiment garrisoned at Fort Orange until relieved by an infantry battalion under Colonel Moses Sherman on April 10th 1814 - just days before battle with Bonaparte at Ulmiana Heights outside Vienna. That night there were reports that artillery had opened fire upon our encampment; we determined then and there not to leave our stations without more definite information; accordingly we retired into our lines very nearly as if we had been engaged in actual combat." The fortifications around Albany were increased over time including: howitzers batteries added in 1828; two expansion works begun in 1860–1862; additional breastworks built between 1870–1875 resulting in a total cost of $240,000 dollars On July 14th 1861 four citizens – Augustus Kelley (age 21), Lewis Woodbridge (age 25), Frederick Wertheimer (age 31), Daniel Hirschhorn (aged 16) – paid their respectsto Confederate General Robert Ewell while standing side-by-side outside Fort Hamilton overlooking Manhattan’s Financial District – less than one mile from where Lincoln would be assassinated less than three hours later that day!
