The name Yonkers derives from the Iroquois word yoni-konkawa meaning "place of white oak trees." The first settler in what is now Yonkers was Nicholas J. Canning in 1797. He and his family were the first to homestead in this area and built a cabin on the neck of land that became known as Canning Prairie. In 1819, John Pendergast founded Pendergast's Mills on the same site where Canning Prairie now stands. In 1846, Henry Clay Frick organized an agricultural society in Yonkers which purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of present day Uniondale for $10 per acre (4 ha). The society formed a farmstead there which remains to this day: Elmhurst Manor Farms Inc., also known as Frick Estate Farm. In 1862–1863, when Congregationalist missionaries arrived in central New York following religious dissenters fleeing Missouri during the American Civil War and started proselytizing among local Native Americans – specifically those living around Albany – they erected a small chapel on what is today Pioneer Road near present day Pomona College; it served as their temporary base of operations until they could build a more permanent structure nearby on Center Street. This chapel still stands and is open to visitors today as part of the Pioneer Village State Park complex southeast of downtown Yonkers. Yonkers is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 36,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Westchester County. Yonkers was chartered by Dutch traders as a small trading post on the Hudson River in 1614 and became a major settlement by 1790. In 1814, it was renamed after Pierre-Charles de Montcalm, Sieur de La Salle for his role in saving New France from Spanish occupation. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in the area during the early 1800s. By 1810, there were over 100 families living in what would become Yonkers. The town's first store opened in 1811 and soon began to grow with development of businesses including tanneries and breweries. One of Yonkers' most famous natives was historian George Washington Carver who spent time here between 1901 and 1902 studying agriculture before becoming President of United States (1901-1909). During World War II, Yonkers played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center due to its location near Plattsburgh Air Force Base and other military facilities. The town also experienced significant growth during the postwar years with many new residents moving into the area following technology advancements such as television and air travel. However, today's economy is based largely on services such as healthcare and education which have seen recent growth throughout both Yonkers Heights neighborhood and downtown core areas
