The Village was merged into Yonkers in 1898 and annexed by the city in 1907. It lay within what is now Upper Manhattan until 1962 when it became one of seven towns in new Albany Township on the east side of Long Island Sound. The first known inhabitants arrived here around 950 AD from what is now Hungary or Slovakia. In 1624, settlers from Amsterdam founded a trading post on this site and named it "Nieuw Utrecht" (New Utrecht). For many years there were no permanent residents because only traders came to this area; later people started coming from upstate New York to fish and farm here during prohibition times. In 1814, Anthony Lomas purchased land in what would become downtown Yonkers from Nicholas Netherland for $2 per acre ($40 per sq mi). He began building a sawmill and gristmill here which he called "Lomasville". By 1870s, his mills had produced lumber for buildings in Buffalo and other parts of New York State as well as exported to Europe. In 1892–93, Lomas donated land to form what would become Central Park (now Madison Square Garden). In 1899, then-Mayor George Biddle proposed annexing all but 1/3rd of Westchester County to make way for an expanding city because westward expansion was necessary for economic development; this proposal won approval from NYS Assemblymen James Meehan and John Fenton despite fierce opposition from some residents who felt that their villages would be taken away without due process or compensation. The annexation failed 2-to-1 with over 100 objections filed against it by local farmers and landowners who felt they would lose their rights to their properties or see their homes destroyed if annexed into the city limits – a situation that has been referred to as "the Rape of Rural America". The loss at assembly did not stop Mayor Biddle though – he soon announced plans for another annexation proposal that would include much more populous White Plains nearby (which also failed). On September 25th 1907 - days after becoming an incorporated municipality - Yonkers voted by referendum passing an ordinance giving its citizens final say on any changes made to its charter including annexing other municipalities located eastward within those boundaries such as white Plains – something which they had been almost powerless to do before due process requirements were met while remaining under municipal jurisdiction. After annexing White Plains Municipal Borough onto its borders with East Harlem & Hudson Valley City our community went through rapid growth with rapidly erected public works mansions being built throughout central park including two large courtyards complete with water fountains that still exist today! This event marks not only our incorporation into NYC but also our emancipation from denominational controls resulting in rapid social change&progressivism

Yonkers grew rapidly during the mid-19th century due to its location on what became known as the "ectar line" which connected Syracuse and Albany through Westchester County. In 1847, over 25 businesses including four mills were licensed to operate within one mile (1 km) of each other in what is now central Yonkers – an unprecedented period for such activity in that era. By 1870, more than 100 businesses had been licensed and many more were added as business growth continued throughout the remainder of the 19th century and into the early 20th century; key factors behind this growth included advances in transportation methods and opportunities for investment outside of rural New York State
