On January 1, 1797, it became an independent state, and on July 25th of that year it merged with Orangeburgh to form what was then called "Newburgh-On-Hudson". The merger resulted in the towns' current name. The original villages were Onondaga and Troy; these have since been discontinued as their populations have dwindled significantly. In 1814–1815 local farmers formed a communal militia to help suppress a rebellion led by Jay Gould during the War of 1812. For this service they were given land east of present-day Yonkers within the new boundaries set out by General Anthony Wayne in his Indian Removal Act of 1830. This area now includes much of present-day Central Park and parts of Upper Manhattan
