The town of White Plains was first settled by Dutch immigrants in 1624 as "Watervliett." In 1795, the land that now makes up White Plains was part of Albany Township. On July 1, 1814, the town of White Plains became a separate village under the name "Newburgh." In 1825, President James K. Polk approved plans for what would become Fordham University; this led to the founding of what is now known as "Fordham Campus." The townspeople began to build homes around this new campus. In 1828-29, they erected a wooden frame courthouse which still stands today on Main Street in downtown White Plains. The cornerstone for this courthouse was laid on March 4th of that year by William Henry Harrison (the future Ulysses S. Grant). On November 15th, 1830, Anthony Post removed all but 2 miles (3 km) of his Ulster estate and donated it to the Town of White Plains in memory of his late wife Hannah Gadsden Post (1801-1875). This donation created one mile (1 km) of public road through the township which served as access roads into and out of the town until 1955 when it became State Road 10A. Prior to its creation as State Road 10A, it traveled through residential areas adjacent to Lake George before entering rural territory near present day Springville where it joins NY Route 9 northbound before terminating at US Highway 14 southbound just outside Ofallon Village
