These men named their new settlement "Westchester". The town was officially founded on July 26, 1787 by order of then-Governor James Clinton. The town gained its current name when it became part of what was then Kings County following New York State's annexation by New York in 1821. Prior to this time, it had been variously called Vedalia or Vestal Heights due to its location atop high hills overlooking rural areas behind present-day White Plains Village and Vestal Hills neighborhoods on Long Island Sound
