White Plains is one of the most-lived towns in New York City and it is considered to be a bedroom community for the city. The first white people to live in what is now White Plains were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. They began growing maize and beans, which they ate fresh or dried, and trading with Native Americans. In 1664, English colonists arrived from England and began settling here as well. The first American school was founded in White Plains in 1793 by Reverend Nathaniel Parker. It was moved to Valhalla nearby in 1807 after being destroyed by a fire. During the Revolutionary War, White Plains sided with the British Parliament over George Washington's Continental Army forces. After the war ended, many of the British settlers decided to stay and start anew but some of them returned home while others continued their lives hereabouts as farmers or traders. In 1814–1815 an outbreak of cholera swept through this area; however, it soon died out due to good hygiene practices practiced then by these early settlers. On July 4th (the date that America attained her independence), 1814 (or July 3rd according to some sources), local residents gathered at Trinity Episcopal Church on Centennial Hill to celebrate their new nation’s accomplishments – including “a day free from public cares” following days dedicated thereto by George Washington and other patriots throughout America prior thereto! This event helped solidify downtown’s reputation as an important center for business activity during this era…and into our present day! A year later on October 25th (1815), another anniversary marker stones were erected near where Union Soldier Colonel James Fenton currently resides on Main Street just east of Route 8). These markers list various events that occurred within this time frame – such as: American victory over France at Saratoga; General John Sullivan succeeded Cornwallis when he became Governor of New York State; construction started on what would become Madison Square Garden; Anthony Peake became Surveyor General for Albany County…. etc., etc.? Regardless though it may have been only 10 short years since Independence had come about & much has changed since then (& especially today!), these markers serve as excellent reminders of both our country’s past & also its continuing growth! In 1860 Whites PLAINS set foot once again inside NYC limits when hundreds upon hundreds migrated HERE from hispanic/mestizo backgrounds specifically looking for work opportunities anywhere BUT Harlem!!! One can only imagine how proud & successful those pioneers must have felt when they eventually accomplished even so much within such a small town situated smack dab between TWO major metropolises!!!
