White Plains is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 24,763 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Westchester County. The name White Plains may be derived from English settlers' use of "Pelham" as a place to call for goods brought overland by horse and wagon back in the early 1800s. The first white person to settle in what would become White Plains was Nicholas Low who arrived on December 14, 1684. He erected a small cabin on what is now State Street, just south of Main Street. Low's cabin served as the nucleus around which subsequent settler communities developed. By 1786, Low had married Mary Wigglesworth and their families moved into a new log cabin built by Nathaniel Gorham on present-day Washington Avenue and Elmira Road (now Park Boulevard). In 1805, Nicholas's son John built a larger log cabin called "Gorham House". This structure served as the nucleus for many more homes until it burned down in 1837. In 1814, government surveyors named two small towns after George Washington: Mount Vernon and Alexandria (later renamed Arlington). The General's hometown at Mount Vernon was too far away so they settled on Arlington instead; this name survives to this day as part of Arlington Heights in northern Illinois. Government surveyors also named another village after Thomas Jefferson – Monticello – but this one didn't take hold because no one lived there long enough to build a courthouse or other public buildings like those characteristic of later villages located near these two major metropolitan areas (New York City and Chicago). It wasn't until 1830 that White Plains received its own post office which arrived from Kingston-on-Hudson via stagecoach service! The White Plains area is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York, approximately 20 miles north of the city of Buffalo and 30 miles south of Syracuse. The population was over 120,000 in 1800 but only about 50,000 by 1860. The town was founded in 1792 by John Jacob Astor and his family as a trading post on the east side of the Susquehanna River. In 1807, James Purdy bought the post from Astor and renamed it White Plains after himself. White Plains grew rapidly during the1820s due to its location at the intersection of two key trade routes: one going west to Canada and another going east to Philadelphia. Mills were established here for grindings such as flour and cornmeal, making it an important center for agricultural production. A canal was built through White Plains in 1825 that facilitated shipping goods between Buffalo and New York City. This helped increase business at mills while also providing access to markets downriver. During World War II, White Plains became a vital military base because it comprised part of Army Air Forces' primary bombing range northeast of Niagara Falls. Due to its strategic location, White Plains also served as an important manufacturing center for munitions used in World War II. White Plains is a town in Erie County, New York, located on the southern border of the city of Buffalo. The population was 12,191 at the 2010 census. It is one of two towns in Erie County that are not part of Buffalo. The first permanent settler in what is now White Plains was Nicholas de Jongh, who arrived from Holland in 1684 and founded a trading post on the Genesee River. In 1757, John Trumbull built his house here as a summer home for himself and his wife Sarah De Witt; it still stands today as one of the town's most notable landmarks. In 1802, Andrew Dickson bought this land from Nicholas de Jongh for $5 per acre. Dickson had been interested in purchasing land east of Buffalo to build mills but did not find any willing sellers until he came across Trumbull's property. He began to work on building his mill here and completed it in 1803. This mill became known as the "Dickson Mill". With its new milling capacity, White Plains quickly became a hub of industry and commerce in central Western New York during the early 19th century. The area also saw significant growth due to its location close to major transportation arteries such as I-81 and US 14 (the old Main Street). By 1860, White Plains had more than 400 residents and was considered an important commercial center within western New York state.
