Some residents chose to stay behind while their homes were destroyed or burned; others took refuge in nearby towns such as Yonkers or Hastings (later renamed Southport). Many white men working for Confederate governments lost their lives or were captured during this time; many black families also lost relatives among those fighting for slavery versus freedom under Union rule – one Revolution’s biggest loss by far!
