White Plains is bordered by the Bronx to the south and east, Yonkers to the north-east, Scarsdale to the north-west and its core lies within White Plains Township on the southern extremity of Westchester County. To its northwest lie Scarsdale and Rye townships which are both part of Ithaca–Syracuse metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now White Plains were Dutch traders who landed there in 1624 on their way from Amsterdam to trade with India. In 1764 George Washington's father moved his family from Virginia into what is now White Plains Manor (now Douglaston) following his successful campaigns against British General Burgoyne during American independence fighting in northeastern NY. For many years it was thought that George Washington spent his childhood here before moving upstate to Highland Center after he was elected President of the United States in 1789-1792; however recent research suggests this may be false as historians have found no evidenceof him living anywhere near White Plains until after he became president! The first post office called "White Plaines" was established in 1814 by Major John Pope Platt under an act of Congress (). The name "White Plaines" replaced "Weehawken", which had been given by Governor Tryon for $1,000 () when much of western Westchester County was added to New York State as part of efforts made between Great Britain and America during the opening years of their commonwealths existence (late 1760s). In 1827 Drayton Waugh purchased land comprising present day Douglaston Village from Abram Cassin for $2,500 (); Drayton Waugh being one of several early settlers who came to this area during this period prior to Western Union Telegraph Company's construction nearby which began operation in 1825 (). By 1830 all but two homes within present day Douglaston Village had been constructed; these houses being erected by local farmers and mechanics who leased space from storekeepers/bretholders on Main Street (). One important early resident or community leader associated with this period was Elijah Hicks (), a Quaker preacher who arrived shortly after Drayton Waugh did and played an important role in organized religious activity within Douglaston Village throughout its earliest years (). In 1830 Elijah Hicks founded what would become known as Hicks Academy (), providing educational opportunities for locals poor enoughto seek them out (). Today some residents still attend Hicks Academy although classes are no longer offered semiannually due primarilyto budget constraints.;[4] A few years later another pioneer settler named Nicholas Griggs arrived followed soon afterward by his wife Ann (born about 1810), daughter Margaret Griggs ()and son Andrew Griggs (); together they formed what would become known as TheGriggses' Store ();[5] . Soon afterwards other families such as The Smiths arrive including James Smith (), Jesse Livermore (), Pollyanna Willoughby ()and Levi Coffin (). Eventually most everyone within modern day Douglaston Village had settled there by 1840. It should be noted that while exact dates cannot be confirmed based upon available records, it seems likely that most or all of today's residents originated within or very nearDouglas Manor township back around 1800-1810 when that particular township lines up almost perfectly with historical boundaries for Whitestone section 3rd Precinct OF WP - hereafter DP3 [6]; i.e., Whitestone town square extending along Main Street northerly bordering Douglas Manor westward towards Route 9V approximately 2 miles south thereof., squarely bisecting & touching DP3 boundary line.] [][]

White Plains, New York is a community in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 37,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Westchester County. White Plains is bordered by the town of Valhalla to the south and north and Islip to the east. The area that now makes up White Plains was first settled by Germans in 1785 as part of Peterboro Township. German immigrants were followed by Irish settlers in 1820 and Italian settlers in 1831. The first post office in White Plains was established on December 12, 1824, under the name "Tuckerton". In 1827, the township was divided into two parts: East White Plains became part of Yonkers while West White Plain went to Valhalla. In 1830, white Dutch farmers from Amersfoort moved onto what is now Meadowlands Drive and began to grow corn and other crops. They named their farm "Westchester" after Sir John Chichester's estate near London where they had been living for some time before moving westward. By 1840 most of these Dutch farmers had left for New York City or elsewhere in North America because of competition from English farmers who grew wheat, barley and other crops. Not until 1865 did white English-speaking people begin to arrive here permanently; this group started out as workers on farms near Scarsdale since those areas were open land grants given to British subjects after American independence. In 1868 local citizens voted unanimously to become a city with its own government; it would be called "New York City." This decision made Whites Plains an important center for trade and industry within rural western New York - goods exported here included whiskey (from Buffalo), clothing (made in Smithtown), eggs (farmed around Utica) and lumber (logged at Rattlesnake Rock).
