The name of the town comes from Dutch colonists who named it "Wakefield" after landowner John Wakefield. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now White Plains were Dutch settlers in 1624-25. They called the area "New Netherland." In 1664, English forces invaded New Netherland and renamed it England's new colony of America. English colonists arrived in what is now White Plains in 1685 as part of an effort to weaken Dutch control over the region. The Dutch had been able to build up a large agricultural empire there during the previous centuries because they had managed to keep key water systems and transportation routes open. In 1795, when Connecticut became a state and Yankee influence increased along with European immigration into that state, Whitesplaining efforts by local ministers led to white people moving into central Westchester County for farmland (the area around White Plains was then mostly forest). Because development occurred closer to major highways than anywhere else in rural Westchester County at that time (the early 19th century was a time of great growth for westchester county), opportunities for agriculture seemed irresistible; so too did settlement pressure from other parts of New York State as well as from neighboring Massachusetts and Pennsylvania . By 1830 only 1/5ths of present-day White Plains residents were actually born within five miles of the village center while most lived on or near farmssteads scattered throughout the township . As farming declined among many white frontier professionals drawn away by opportunities elsewhere during this period—including cameos by such giants as Andrew Carnegie—a larger percentage (now almost two thirds)of Whitespansians worked manufacturing jobs outside their homes or inside small businesses run by their own family members rather than on farms themselves or through purchasing shares or partnership arrangements with others

It is part of the Syracuse-New York metropolitan area. The first European to visit White Plains was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. His mapping expedition discovered that what he thought was a peninsula were actually three islands which he named "Islandia" after his Italian navigator, Andrea Doria. The village of White Plains began as a cluster of log cabins on Long Island Sound where white farmers could trade with Native Americans and buy goods from them. In 1795, General George Washington founded West Point Academy in nearby Plattsburgh, which became one of America's most prestigious military academies along with Harvard University and Princeton University. In 1815, when Congress created Niagara County out of western Ontario (now Ontario), it included parts of present-day Whites Plains and Cold Spring Harbor. The village gradually grew away from its rural agricultural roots into an established community filled with prosperous entrepreneurs and professional men who ran successful businesses such as agriculture, transportation, publishing, law enforcement and medicine. By 1870s most residents hadigrated to other parts of Upstate New York or Canada for work opportunities during the Great Migration to industrialization new American cities like Chicago and Buffalo during the late 19th century Economic expansion following World War I led to increased demand for housing and jobs throughout White Plains; however many residents chose not to move away due to their lack of opportunity or affordable housing options outside their townships/towns themselves
The White Plains area began as a hunter-gatherer community in the late Paleolithic period. The first permanent Europeans to settle in the area were French colonists who arrived in 1624, followed by English colonists in 1664. The region was part of New York until 1783, when it became part of Pennsylvania.
