White Plains is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 24,752 at the 2010 census. White Plains is one of two towns in the county and it straddles both banks of the Hudson River. The other town is Ardsley. The first Europeans to visit what is now White Plains were French traders and missionaries in 1624–25. They named the area Nouvelle-York (New York City), but this name was not used for many years because the English wanted their new colony to be called New Netherland. In 1664, English colonists found white coal there and began construction on an iron furnace that became known as "the furnace of white stone." By 1700, the town had a population of 5,000 people and was home to two churches: First Presbyterian (1701) and Congregationalist (1713). The first school in White Plains was opened in 1772 by teacher Ebenezer Prentice. In 1814, President James K. Polk transmitted to Congress his plan for annexing Canada's Upper Canada into the United States; under this proposal, White Plains would have become part of Buffalo Township in Erie County and would have been within reach of Niagara Falls. However, since no action was taken on this proposal until after Polk's death in 1846, little can be said about what might have happened if he had been successful. In 1865 when Union General Ulysses S Grant moved from Vicksburg to Chattanooga during Sherman's Alabama Campaigns Offensive along Interstate 65 southward from Chattanooga towards Atlanta%, he passed through White Plains on his way northward - becoming only the second American military figure ever to do so! After Sherman's surrender at Appomattox Court House three days later on April 9th 1865 Confederate General Robert Ewing arrived at White Plains with his staffel of horsemen seeking refuge inside Fort Clinton awaiting orders from ConfederateGeneral Nathan Bedford Forrest leading an all-out assault against Ulysses S Grant's army which surrendered one day earlier at Greensboro Court House less than three miles away! On April 10th 1865 General Forrest ordered his forces across I-65 eastward en route back north towards Savannah/Atlanta where they destroyed much equipment including five artillery pieces captured during Sherman’s march! The town was first settled by Dutch and English settlers in 1624 as a small hamlet on the east side of Long Island Sound. White Plains was chartered as a town on November 3, 1785, from parts of Townshend and Westchester counties. The original name for the town was "Westervelt". In 1836, White Plains became one of several towns to be annexed by Rochester, New York. From 1847 until its merger with Rochester in 1898, White Plains had separate legal existence as an independent village. The Erie Canal links White Plains with Buffalo and other points northward; it also connected the village with what are now Yonkers and Valhalla in upstate New York. This canal helped spur development around the eastern edge of White Plains and along Route 9A (now Sunrise Highway). Starting in about 1800, white-collar workers began moving into this developing area to take advantage of new jobs created by industry growth south of Buffalo
The town of White Plains was founded in 1724 by John Barker and his wife Elizabeth. The first post office was established in 1727, and the first store opened in 1729. In 1814, White Plains became a stop on the Underground Railroad.
