White Plains, New York is a small town in upstate New York that was founded by English colonists in 1624. The town has been part of the United States since 1776. White Plains is located on the east side of the Hudson River and is bordered by Westchester County to the south, Rockland County to the west, and Putnam County to the north. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now White Plains were Dutch settlers who came from Amsterdam in 1624. They named their settlement "Oostendorp." In 1627, General Nicholas Wahlgrens moved his army from Albany to White Plains and called it Fort Nassau after his castle at Nassau in Holland. In 1629-30, another group of Dutch colonists arrived from New Netherland and named their settlement "New Amsterdam." This name was changed to White Plains due to its close resemblance to Amsterdam's old city center. White Plains was originally a part of Westchester County. On November 1, 1776, during the American Revolution, Yankees took over Fort George on Long Island and moved into what is now White Plains as part of Operation Lambshead. The town became a part of New York State on January 1, 1777. On July 15th of that year, Congress passed an act creating a new county called Rockland County out of parts of Westchester and Orange counties. On October 5th following this act proclamation was given for martial law throughout all sections within said counties until further order could be obtained from congress or general quarters because there existed among us an insurrectionary force composed chiefly (but not exclusively)of our own citizens...In pursuance thereof I issued this proclamation: “All persons found within these limits must immediately leave them; no person shall be allowed entry except with orders from me personally”...On December 10th General Washington arrived at White Plains with his armysurrounded by British forces under Lieutenant Colonel John Sullivan...Washington ordered Major James Wilkinson (a militiaman)to take possessionof Fort Georgeand march towards Saratoga where he expected reinforcements would be available...Wilkinson reached Saratoga but encountered resistance from rebel forces led by Benedict Arnold... Arnold fled before Wilkinson could capture him...Aftermath OF Saratoga Campaign On December 20th Wilkinson received word that British troops had evacuated Saratoga without taking any prisoners or treasure.....White plains experienced some pretty bad times during those days especially considering how small it actually was....It still holds a special place in my heart because even though we lost something beautiful (the fort), we gained so much more including everlasting friendship with America
