In 1830, White Plains became part of what would become Dutchess County when it was created from portions of Chenango and Westchester counties. Beginning in 1831 through 1840, various stone quarries were located within or near White Plains; these quarries are now collectively known as Old Stone Quarry Site (OSQS). These quarries produced many important buildings including two gallows which remain standing today (the first being erected in 1789), as well as numerous other items such as steps and paving blocks for streets and public squares throughout the town today
The first white American settlement in what is now White Plains, New York was a small group of thirteen men and women who traveled from Connecticut in 1624. They named the settlement for their home town of Plainfield, which they had just left. The early colonists soon realized that there was no water or land available to them on the outskirts of present-day White Plains, so they built an encampment on a hill overlooking the village. Over time, other settlers arrived and various disputes over land and resources led to several wars between the British and Indian empires. In 1775, during the Revolutionary War, Patriot forces fought an 80-day battle at White Plains against General George Washington’s army. The battle resulted in British losses totaling more than 3,000 casualties while American forces lost only a few hundred people. After the war ended, many of the original colonists returned to New England and their settlements were abandoned. However, some families continued to live in White Plains until around 1800 when it became part of Seneca County, New York.
