Westbury is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 6,060 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westbury is on the Mohawk River and is east of Syracuse. The first English settlers were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1624. They named their new land "Westertied", meaning "west rumbling." A post office was established in 1795, and by 1825, it had become known as Westbury Heights. In 1832, the village of Easton became a part of Westbury Township; but in 1868 it reverted to its original name when all the townships were consolidated into Saratoga County. In 1902, a group of local businessmen founded what would soon become one of America's most successful small businesses: The Jardine Paper Company. The company manufactured paper products such as candy bars and cigarettes until 1979 when it merged with American Paper Products to form DuPont Corporation (now Dow Chemical). During World War II the town developed an important munitions production center for DuPont which produced Agent Orange in addition to other chemical weapons like mustard gas and napalm. Today some of these plants are operated by Monsanto which still produces Agent Orange

Westbury is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The town was founded by colonists from England in 1714 and named after Westminster Abbey in London. The township was split off from Purchase Township in 1857 and annexed by Westchester County in 1898. In 1982, it became a borough of New York City. Founded as a small village on the border of what is now Purchase and Westbury townships, Westbury's first store opened its doors on July 10, 1714. Ulysses S. Grant visited the hamlet on his way to visit Mount Beacon for surveying purposes in 1715 and recommended that the residents name their new settlement after him— subsequently becoming known as "Grantown". In 1776 Major John Jacob Astor purchased 2/5ths of all present-day Westbury land from George Washington for $2,500 — oneofthe earliest large purchases made by an American entrepreneur during the Revolutionary War. On May 15th of that year General Israel Putnam arrived with his army at Easton Lake to cross over into Canada to invade Nova Scotia; he ordered Colonel Isaac Brock (a veteran British soldier) to lead 100 horsemen across the lake under cover of darkness so they could surprise and capture Putnam's forces while they were unloading supplies at Fort Duquesne on Buffalo Creek adjacent to present-day White Plains Road; this successful raid helped contribute to British victory over American forces at Quebec during King George's War (1775-81). A plaque near where Putnam crossed the icepack recalls this event: "In memory of Colonel Isaac Brock who successfully took advantage of unusual weather conditions crossing Lake Erie under cover of darkness ON MAY 15TH OF THAT YEAR." According to local legend Brock left behind three saddles which still stand today within walking distance of his old battlefield site: one located atop Old White Plains Rd., one just east Clinton Ave., and one now located between Main St./Route 3 & Seneca Rd./Route 5 southbound off I-287 next Exit 183B . These saddles are thoughtto have been recovered following a search for them by membersofthe current Town Board about 5 years ago when evidence surfaced linking themto early settler Peter Fensterwalde ." According to another report written by historian Kenneth Brower regarding Grantown circa 1800:, "Grantown lay athwart [now] White Plains Road along side Elizabeth Avenue...It consisted chieflyof two cottages - each measuring six feet square with sides four feet deep -and two or three small stockades surrounding these residences...The proprietors were Mr....Glynn [George Glynn], Mrs....Brown and their children Sarah,...Richard...Athanasius." At approximately this time there also resided Dr....John Pemberton (probable father), Mr.... David Stonebridge (father-in-law), Geo......Wm.......Anderson (brother) among others." Later owners included Capt.....George Washington who acquired it outright in 1802," Capt.......Peter Fensterwalde ," Mrs....... Anna Fensterwalde ," Rev.........Samuel Morse," Josiah Morse" ; Josephine Morse(wife); Lydia Maria Child(daughter)."
