Westbury is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–on-Hudson metropolitan area. In 1724, Daniel Webster bought 5 acres (2 ha) of land on what became Westbury Square and began to build a house there. In 1788, he donated an additional 2 acres (1 ha) to make up the present square. The first post office in Westbury was established in 1814. The name of the town was changed from Westmoreland to Westbury in 1828. The town was incorporated as a village in 1851 and again as a township in 1898. It became an independent city on July 1, 1923. City officials renamed it after General George Washington on November 15, 1924; however, the General died just two weeks later without leaving any instructions for that change. As of 2000, only one street remained named for him: Washington Boulevard

Westbury is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 24,721 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from an early English settler, John Westbury, who purchased land there in 1784. The first post office in Westbury was established in 1807. In 1853, the town became part of New York City and it has remained a small community throughout its history. The townsite that now makes up the incorporated area of Westbury was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1614 as "Willemstadt". On July 22, 1784, John Westbury purchased two lots within what is now the Town of Westbury from Nicholas Van Cortlandt for £300 ($405). He named his new tract "Westbury", after himself and his wife Dorothy (née Goodspeed) had moved to England from their home on Long Island about three years earlier. In 1825, when New York State acquired all of what is now western New York from Spain following their Mexican War victory over Mexico City's Spanish garrison at El Paso de Texas, the state legislature decided that part of this territory should be designated as "westchester county". On December 12th of that year legislation passed by both houses establishing that westchester county would encompass all or nearly all of what is now eastern and southern Ridgewood Township; parts of Spring Valley and Sayville; most of White Plains; east Harlem; and much or all of village and hamlet Pleasantville within present-day Ossining Village limits.. This left only a small piece (less than one half square mile) south side extending into Romanoff Township lying outside present day Ossining Village limits. On February 14th 1830 Abraham Lincoln was elected President with 71%OfThe Votes defeating John Quincy Adams who received 27%. Many people thought he might have won because Adams' opponent had been able to raise money through loans backed by then-Gov Andrew Johnson but no evidence exists to support this claim other than Lincoln's own words during his campaign speeches which said he would ratify any treaties made between America and Great Britain without giving them an opportunity to be filibuster'd. To commemorate this event many local businesses including Butcher House Tavern put up signs reading: "Lincoln 3rd Term" near where he voted on December 12th 1830 just before leaving for Washington D C
