In 1764, when New York became a state, Westbury became one of its first towns. In 1813, two brothers named John Van Nostrand purchased 2 million acres (8 km2) of land east of Buffalo along with some other investors to build an estate that would become known as Van Nostrand Manor. After several years of construction it was completed in 1827 and served as the center for government and business operations in Upstate New York until it burned down in 1898 due to faulty wiring inside the mansion’s library; this event remains one of history’s most infamous failures within city limits. After losing much property during Andrew Jackson’s presidency through Indian Removal policies (1832–1846), many farmers bought or donated land near present day Westbury to establish villages such as Whitehall and North Whitehall Township (now an unincorporated community). However, development stagnated until after World War II when new housing developments began coming built close to downtown Rochester; these areas have since turned into neighbourhoods with single-family homes as their predominant form of home ownership. Most recently there has been significant redevelopment taking place near Interstate 685 which forms part of what is now called “The Village” – a mixed-use neighbourhood anchored by two large shopping centres: One Stop Mart (an anchor store opened circa 1990) and Mohawk Mall (opened circa 2005), while also featuring several restaurants/cafes/bars/entertainment venues/. The area now includes the towns of Westbury Park and Suffern, as well as parts of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westbury were Dutch traders and missionaries in 1624. It wasn't until 1764 that Britain granted land east of the mountains to George Washington in order to establish an outpost for American colonists. In 1776, when Revolutionary War began, General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga Springs, NY after leading a cavalry charge across the Hudson River into Manhattan. At Fort Westmoreland (later known as Fort Clinton), Burgoyne's army stopped supply lines from approaching Albany and lost some 1,200 men killed or captured. In 1812, Congress passed the Organic Act which created eight counties in upstate New York: Broome, Chenango, Erie, Fulton*, Hamilton* (now Wyoming), Jefferson*, Kings County*, Livingston*, Onondaga* (now Oswego) and Ulster County*. The population of each county increased gradually through immigration over time; by 1840 there were over 21000 people living in all eight counties combined! A new courthouse was built at Westbury in 1814; it burned down two years later but was replaced with a larger structure that still stands today. That building served as both a courthouse and jail from 1828 until 1908 when it was replaced by State Courts Building No. 2 on Lake Ontario Boulevard in downtown Scranton. In 1830s Charles Larkin opened his successful grocery store at 4th Street & Main Street; this store became one of the most important thoroughfares in westchester county for many decades afterwards! Westbury also saw significant growth during the late 1800s due to its location close to Mohawk Valley manufacturing centers such as Buffalo Bill Cody's ranch northwest of townhomes along Main Street between 1850-1900s; business activity continued even after he left for good! During WWI British troops occupied much of westchester county while they fought against German forces northeast of town; although civilian life briefly resumed following their withdrawal some businesses closed permanently due to wartime restrictions including importation quotas! After WWI much farmland around town was donated back to local farmers who used it extensively for growing crops instead of selling them off like previous generations had done! The population peaked at 8650 during 1950 census but has slowly declined since then with many residents moving away either because they found better opportunities elsewhere or because suburban sprawl started creeping into their neighborhoods! However recent efforts by city officials to attract more residents have resultedin a modest increase in population over last decade!!
