Westbury, New York is a small town located in the Town of Westbury on Long Island. The population was 1,157 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The name "Westbury" derives from an ancient British trading post at present-day Westbury Point on the Atlantic Ocean. In 1714, when Sir George Frisby founded Stony Brook University and moved its operations to nearby Islip, he purchased part of what is now Westbury village and named it after his patron saint, St. John the Baptist. During World War II, many factories were built in and around Westbury Village including Ford Motor Company's Pascagoula Plant and other large employers like Dillon Ewing Aircraft Manufacturing Company (DEAMCO) which manufactured Curtiss JF-4D Skyhawks for USAF pilots training at Muroc Air Force Base outside Los Angeles; GEICO Insurance had its El Paso plant in operation from 1949 to 1957; Chrysler Corporation had a major plant there from 1951 to 1957; Continental Airlines used parts manufacturing plants there from 1942 until 1963; United States Rubber Co.'s Manila Plant produced tires for USAAF bombers during World War II; Astoria Paper Products Inc., which made paper products such as kraft paper towels and toilet tissue for American consumers, operated an extensive facilities there until it closed its doors in 1987.
