In 1776, European settlers founded what is now Westbury on the southern edge of present-day Easton Township on the Mohawk River. The original settler were Nicholas Colgan and his family from County Clare, Ireland. Mr. Colgan had traveled to America to find a new home for his family after their home country was destroyed by British forces during the Cromwellian Wars (1649-53). He arrived with his pregnant wife and two young children at what is now the junction of routes 12 and 13A near what is today's intersection of Routes 12A and 13A. The first permanent structure erected in what is now Westbury was a log cabin erected by Nicholas Colgan around 1778. It served as both Colgan's home and business until it burned down circa 1800 following a dispute between him and some local traders over fishing rights on the river below. By 1825, when Westbury became an organized village under the leadership of Reverend John Fenton, its population numbered only 10 people due to persecution from neighboring towns that resented being forced to share jurisdiction with one another. However, despite this difficulties, villagers worked hard to build up infrastructure such as schools (1825), churches (1859), post office (1872), fire department (1911), grocery store (1924), garage (1963), water system (1978) – all while keeping politics out of their everyday lives through community meetings or individual votes known as "434". During World War II, many residents donated goods or services totaling $5 million to help support war efforts including cigarettes ($1 million) which helped bring about better working conditions for American soldiers; radios ($500 thousand); toolboxes ($100 thousand); trucks ($50 thousand); clothing items such as shoeshine parlors (£10 thousand) – allOperation Crossroads; machines used in munitions factories like those located at nearby Buffalo Niagara Falls; machine tools like lathes & drills etc.$2 million raised through various fundraising events throughout 1945/46 alone; flowers for military graves($5 hundred dollars each).
