Westbury is a small town in western New York, United States. The population was 7,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Westbury was John Morse in 1795. In 1807, Samuel Chapman purchased land from the Canandaigua Indians and built a mill on the creek that flows through town. His son, George Chapman, founded the village of Westbury on this land in 1825. The village became an incorporated town in 1838. In 1860, when Buffalo was annexed to New York City, Westbury had a population of 2,000 residents and employed nineteen people as merchants and farmers. In 1870 it had 563 citizens and employed thirty-six people as merchants and farmers; by 1880 it had 1,022 citizens and employed fifty-nine people as merchants and farmers; by 1890 it had 1,539 citizens and Employed seventy-eight people as merchants or farmers: these statistics reflect steady growth until about 1920 when there were sharp decreases due to World War I (1914-18), Prohibition (1920-33), economic recession (1933-37), World War II (1945-46), repeal of Prohibition (1948) and various other factors: during World War II only twenty two citizens were hired by local businesses; between 1950 and 1990 employment increased only 4%. In 2000*, according to the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey*,Westbury had a total population of 7,463*. White nonResidents made up 54% of this population* while Hispanic made up 26%. Westbury, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Westbury was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after an estate in Wales that he had seen on his journey from Rome to France. A post office called Westbury was established in 1813 and remained until 1959. Westbury has been inhabited by humans since at least 12,000 years ago according to archeological evidence found near the town site. The first permanent European settlement arrived in 1772 by Major General George Washington and his forces during their march through Sullivan County from Canada into New York state as part of their campaign for independence from Great Britain. They built a small farmstead on the current east side of Main Street between Clinton and Alger streets and called it "Westbury". Over time, other pioneers moved into this area including Isaac Pembroke who founded Mechanicsville on the west bank of the Seneca River opposite present day Schenectady; John Stevens purchased land on what is now Elmira Road about two miles northeast of present day Westbury; and Nicholas Wright developed a salt works on what is now Main Street just outside the boundaries of today's town limits (west of Iroquois Avenue). In 1814, five hundred acres (two square kilometers) were purchased by Eli Whitney along with twenty-five slaves from Nicholas Wright's saltworks for $1 million dollars which made Whitney one of America's wealthiest men. By 1830 settlers had increased to 3200 residents living mainly around buildings located north-south Tryon avenue off High Street across Frome creek south down Tryon Avenue towards Elmira Road thence east along Tryon Avenue all the way to Northumberland avenue where they stopped building new homes as sectional tensions mounted during President James Kephart's attempt to create a Kansas Territory out of western New York following Samuel Inslee's decision not to allow slavery within his territory In 1830 Tompkins County was created from parts or all of Monroe and Chenango Counties which included Westchester County so East Aurora became part of Tompkins County when Orangeburg Township west became part of Chenango County . Westbury was first settled by the Lenape in 1624. The area now includes Westbury, New York and many of the villages that make up the town. The Lenape were a tribe of Native Americans who roamed the northeastern United States for centuries. In 1664, they moved westward and began to settle in what is now southeastern New York. They built their homes on high ground near present-day Westbury Village. The first white settlers came to Westbury from Connecticut in 1696. They were looking for land to purchase from the Indians. Some of these early settlers were men named spelling variations of William Shakespeare, such as "Willis" and "Willoughby." Others began farming here and built houses around 1710. The first school was founded in 1711 at what is now called Meeting House Hill. In 1814, General George Washington sent troops into western New York to prevent a French invasion. After driving the French out of Canada, he decided to push eastward and cross the Niagara River into Ontario instead. His military forces encountered resistance from local Indian groups led by Chief Joseph Brant—the largest group ever encountered by Europeans on American soil—and General Washington retreated back into Pennsylvania before reaching Toronto on July 15th, 1814. This event is generally regarded as one of America's earliest strategic defeats abroad; it also ended British efforts to establish control over North America following its victory at Waterloo two years earlier
