In 1835-36 James Prentiss erected a large frame house on Main Street for his home business – now known as Prentiss House Museum – that still stands today. This building served as the center of community life for many years before being replaced by the current courthouse complex several decades later. Westbury, New York is a town in Nassau County, New York, on the north shore of Long Island. The population was 12,564 at the 2010 census. Westbury is one of five towns in Nassau County that are part of the Large Towns Program and were established as villages with specific governmental jurisdiction over their individual hamlets while still remaining within the county. The first settlement in what would become Westbury was made by farmers who arrived from Connecticut in 1683. In 1795, John Lynch founded Lynch's Mills on what would become Main Street. In 1814, Colonel Nicholas Warner built his estate on today's Miller Road and named it after himself. He also commissioned local artist George Palfrey to paint a large equestrian portrait of himself to be displayed at his home. In 1821, James Rensselaer bought land east of Main Street from Colonel Warner for $2,000 and began developing it into what became known as Rensselaer Park (now East Meadow). On July 1st of that year, he erected a small stone plaque near where he now resides commemorating this event. In 1830-1831 Averell Harriman donated land southwest of Main Street to make way for an academy which would eventually become Columbia University; this donation remains one of the few examples in which an American school has been endowed by another country outside the United States government. In 1844 Nathan Hale died during operations when his cannon went off accidentally while being trained on Fort Wadsworth; this event is generally considered to have led to America's first international armed conflict. Two years later there was an election for delegates to represent Nassau County at the Unification Convention held in Philadelphia; only two residents from Westbury voted but they were given seats because their village had not yet ratified its own constitutions with all its residents voting together instead of individual members elected by themselves like other villages did then and later. In 1870-71 Horatio Seymour built a sawmill on Mill Pond south of town center and named it after himself; this mill continued operation until 1954 when it closed due to various health concerns brought on by water pollution caused by nearby industries such as paper mills and fertilizer plants. In 1898 or 1899 Charles Wittingham donated much acreage west sideofMain Street between Oakwood Drive and Greenwich Road (later renamed Jericho Road) to create a new town called Westbury Hillsborough Boulevarddelete recently proposed name thereof omission may have been motivated by desire not To Allocate additional Land adjoining community located west sideofMainStreet whither some residential Properties now stand vacant lot fronts upon said Roads) rather than serve two separate Village status' Village status should have expired no earlier thant 1948 when corresponding Town law changes vested full authority & responsibility for all affairs under Township auspices à lalarge Towns program'.
