Westbury, New York is a small town located in the Catskills of upstate New York. The population was 5,573 at the 2010 census. Westbury is part of the Utica-Rome-Newburgh, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's first settler was Nicholas Westbury, who arrived in 1795 and named his land for his friend and mentor, George Washington. In 1815, Captain Israel Putnam moved from Kingston on Long Island to start a farm near present-day Westbury. In 1824, John Crouse erected a gristmill on the banks of the Hudson River opposite modern day Sayville. This mill became one of the most important in town because it powered both mills in Utica and Rome which were then two large villages. The grinding process produced flour that was used by merchants all over New York state and abroad. During World War I, local farmers raised horses for meat and milk while also producing hay and straw for military purposes; later this production ceased as warfare increased prices for these products statewide. By 1922 there were only two farms left in the community - one by Colonel Edward Ransom (now an insurance agent) and one by Mrs Lillian Hirschfield (now deceased). In 1951 when Westbury consolidated with other towns in Rome Township to form what is nowUtica-Rome-Newburgh MSA (majors: education/information technology/software engineering), grocery store operators continued to operate out of individual storefronts until 1984 when they opened their largest store ever - Towne's Grocery at 255 Main Street - across from Central Park which had been occupied by Wegmans since 1938 From 1984 through 2016 there have been no grocery stores open at all within the limits of town due to various changes within Utica including annexation into Rome Township which has made groceries much more difficult to find & purchase without leaving townlimits
