In 1916-17, Mayor John Whelan convened a grand jury which charged seven men with bribery and extortion totaling $1 million dollars (at that time). These charges led to Whelan's impeachment proceedings and he eventually resigned from office after being found guilty on all but one charge against him - money laundering - though two other charges were not proven at trial: obstruction of justice and witness tampering . The current mayor is Jeff Klein (D). After serving two terms as Town Clerk from 2004-2010 and then appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo as Deputy Director for Municipal Affairs under Queens Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Klein ran unsuccessfully for Mayoralty against incumbent Jeffery Mapes on November 3rd 2014 with over 53% of the vote compared to Mapes' 46%. Klein also served as Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CDEO) for Queens Borough President Diaz Jr.'s unsuccessful campaign for Mayoralty against incumbent Joe Lhota on November 3rd 2013

The first settlers in what is now Westbury Township were three families who arrived from Connecticut in 1688. The township was organized on December 2, 1792. At that time it comprised only a part of present-day Sullivan County and its name originated with a dispute between two farms that lay within its limits: one called Westbury and the other Easton. Westbury became a village on February 8, 1812 when it merged with the neighboring town of Putnam to form the Village of Westbury platted under an act of Assembly passed November 20, 1813. On May 25th, 1870 incorporation as a town was granted by an act of the New York State Legislature to succeed Greenbush which had been disestablished by Act No 527 of 1865 due to lack of population growth or development during that period; however no such incorporation took place until 1871 because Greenbush had already attained incorporated status as a village prior to this date according to Town Law § 10-a (2). In 1898 for reasons unknown but believed to be related to increased automobile traffic through Sullivan County caused by new railroad construction through townspeople erected signs reading "No Cars Allowed" along Main Street although vehicles continued to drive up and down this street even after prohibition began ten years earlier; this led some people in nearby Putnamville (now Northport) to refer also to their small community as "Westerbury". The original sign has been preserved at least partially today and can be seen outside the current entrance into town following Route 9 north from US 1/9 just past Exit 7A (the former main road into town). In 1923 post office activity ceased operations withintown limits so all mail served by established postmasters withinwestchester county either went through Putnamville or Hempstead then via express service from both towns until 1955 when all mail serving westchester county was moved back into Putnamville due largely then to changes in postal service regulations enacted subsequent year which made it more difficult for small businesses than larger ones situated inside city limits or rural areas not served by local post offices - see also History page for full story Main Street running northeast from downtown leads generally northwestward through picturesque countryside past rolling hills housing many farming families till reaching further rolling country again before coming back out onto Main Street once more passing near old Dutch Reformed Churchyards before continuing generally northwestward past several homes built around 1915 known locally as "The Gables" which are still standing today despite having lost most or all their contents during various moves over time including one particular move described as follows: "...a five-story frame house moving across lot #1 containing 50 acres valued at $25,000 found possessions including tools cupboards shelves bed frames china cabinets wash dishes stove & oven mugs dishes silverware pendants lamps watches Bridgeport NY 1912" This particular relocation story has been told numerous times throughout history but unfortunately there is no definitive proof one fact replaces another making it difficult if not impossibleto ascertain accurately where exactly these houses once stood - possibly they still do stand somewhere close by though nobody knows for certain? As mentioned previously some residents may have relocated closer to I-9 while others may have chosen instead less traveled routes farther away from downtown such as Elmira Road leading southeast out of town Generally speaking much like growing populations over time tend towards central business districts large shopping malls etc.; accordingly downtown properties continue largely unchanged regardless major movements over time huh? Eventually both villages disbanded their school districts and merged into one single district which continues to operate today as called NYS District 35-Westbury (although some residents now call it "Eastchester-Westbury"). According to the 2000 census, there were 21,801 people living in Westburytownships; 9 live within city limits while 16 live in other towns or villages within NYS District 35-Westbury: Ardsley (2), Bachmanville (1), Bedford Falls (4), Brookline Manor (1), Darien Lake (3), Dix Hills/North Syracuse/South Whitestone/Thames Valley Plaza(1) Glen Cove(5) Horseheads Mills(3) Indian Head Heights(2).
