In 1826 the village became part of the newly formed town of Fulton. On December 12th 1870,Westbury's first election yielded a slate of five trustees to serve as directors of public works and selectmen for the new village government. On July 1st 1909 Westbury celebrated its 350th anniversary with an elaborate celebration including 4 days of festivities culminating with a parade through downtown streets ending at Green-Wood Cemetery where President George Washington lay buried during his second term in office. In 1966-1967 two waves of immigrants arrived in Westbury - Polish Americans who cleaned up what had formerly been farmland; and Vietnamese American students who worked at local factories before returning home to start their own families soon after college graduation or starting their own businesses in their adopted countries. As these groups interacted with one another they started to form social clubs which are still active today - such as Mothers’ Club #2 (Plymouth Meeting), American Legion (Watertown), Kiwanis (Brooklyn) & Rotary Clubs (Latham). Westbury, New York is a small town in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. It is located on the border of Saratoga and Jefferson counties and straddles the Mohawk River. The population was 1,992 at the 2000 census. Westbury's history began with Indian Chiefs who occupied this area for several thousand years before white traders arrived. The first European to arrive in what is now Westbury was Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor, Sieur de La Salle, in 1718. He founded what would become Albany on an island in the river and named it after himself, which he did because he thought no one else would want it. In 1814 Alexander Hamilton purchased land east of the Mohawk River from the Seneca nation for $10,000 dollars. He named his new settlement Westchester County after his maternal grandfather, William Walden (1724-1812), a member of Congress from Rhode Island and one of America's most influential patriots during its early days as an empire under George Washington. In 1825 Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor donated 144 acres (61 hectares) to the town of Westbury for use as a public square and cemetery; this donation also included part of present-day Saratoga Springs. The first settler was John Morse who arrived in 1827 with his family; they built a log cabin on Ridge Road near where Morse’s farm still stands today. Morse was followed by others over time and by 1870 there were 300 residents living hereabouts including 108 farmers, 52 mechanics, 12 teachers and two storekeepers. The community experienced rapid growth following passage by New York State Legislature in 1865 of a bill authorizing state government financing for local improvements such as roads, schools and hospitals; this legislation marked bothWestbury’s emergence as a major center of commerce within New York State (and later nationally) – indeed it helped spur further development throughout portions of what are now Saratoga County (including parts that now make up East Aurora), Jefferson County (including present day White Plains), Ontario County (now Central Harlem) and Erie County (now Buffalo). At that time only five miles wide across all four counties but rapidly expanding into all surrounding rural areas – aided greatly by railroad construction –Westbury had become one of America’s leading towns by 1850its population having reached 2,500 people! In 1886 Alfred Payson Weston acquired 875 acres adjacent to present day Greenburgh Village westward along Route 9 from Clarksville through South Orangeburg Township to join forces with other interested farmers to form what would become known as Meadowlands Shopping District #3A – which gave rise ultimately to Oneida Mall! In 1907–08 dances were held at various locations around town each week culminating with an “all night extravaganza” at Town Hall sponsored by Mrs Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney featuring national acts like Meyerbeer & Strauss Conducting Wagner excerpts from Tristan und Isolde . On Thursday nights prior thereto large tents were set up downtown complete with bedding for the dancers/pianists/dancers auxiliaries who continued practicing until about 4am Friday morning just before curtain call! By 1910 there were more than 2 dozen dance halls scattered throughout town hosting nearly 100 different typesof entertainment nightly! This type or scale musical events continued well into World War II when many places like White Sands Missile Range used large auditoriumsigsituating changes taking place not just inside our towns but alsoinpopulations larger than ever before due largelyto war production demands however smaller venues remained popular thruoutthe conflict right up until late 1945when movies became standard fare again!!
