Westbury is a small town located in the easternmost corner of New York State. The population was 5,332 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mohawk Valley region. The town was founded by three Dutch farmers in 1764 and named for Mount Westbury, an important peak in the Catskill Mountains. In 1808, when Albany was moved to its present location, Westbury became part of it. In 1814, when Saratoga County was created from parts of Albany and Schenectady counties, Westbury became one of its first towns. The Methodist Episcopal Church built a church in 1829 and other religious institutions followed soon after. The first school opened in 1827 and classes were held every day except Sundays until 1861, when they were suspended because of financial difficulties. Classes resumed on April 3 that year and remain so to this day. From 1860-1876, local farmer John Pugh operated a successful gristmill which provided flour for many stores in Albany and Schenectady Counties as well as for export to Europe. His mill closed during World War II but has been restored several times since then According to the 2010 census, there are 5,332 people living within the town limits; 1% are Native American (Albany), 0% are African American (4%), 0% are Asian or Pacific Islander (0%), 97% are white European/American citizens (excluding those who identify as black or Hispanic). Westbury, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 8,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls-Toronto metropolitan area. Westbury was first settled by pioneers in 1795 and incorporated as a village in 1825. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location near Niagara Falls and its position as an important transportation hub on the Mohawk River. In 1916, Westbury became the seat of Erie County after it was detached from Niagara County. The towns of Canandaigua and Oneida also joined Erie County in 1926. The towns of East Aurora and North Aurora merged into Erie County in 1932. In 1957, Westchester became an independent Borough within Erie County and adopted a new name: Westbury Township. On July 1, 2014, all of Monroe Township (west of I-80) merged with Westbury to form a second municipality called "Newburgh". On October 16th of that year Ontario's provincial government announced that they would be making changes to local government in Canada which would see communities like this merge together into one municipality - this change would take place over several years so that communities could get their own elected leaders who could make decisions about how their community should operate
