Westbury is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 34,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater New York metropolitan area. The name "Westbury" originated from the English word "Wetherby". The first Europeans to arrive in this region were clothiers and farmers who established trading posts on Long Island Sound. In 1714, settlers from Connecticut arrived at Newtown Point on Long Island and began trading with Indians. By 1724, traders had founded what would become Westbury on the east side of present-day Rye Creek. A post office was established here in 1730 and remained until 1811. In that year, the town became a full county under New York State. In 1800, George Washington purchased 5 acres (20 hectares) of land east of Rye Creek for $10 per acre ($). He named it Mount Vernon after his presidential home at Mount Vernon plantation in Virginia. The first white settler there was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1807 as part of the first wave of immigration to Upper Canada following British North America's entering into Confederation that year. At first Smith platted out just one block off present-day Main Street which he called "Newtown." However, because many people wanted to live closer to their jobs than they could walk or bike to work each day, he soon subdivided his land into tracts and started selling lots back to its original purchasers subject only to annual maintenance payments made by him personally rather than through an agent or elected body such as a town board or county commissioners In 1827–28 dispute arose over property lines between two other proprietors: Moses Wright and Solomon Davenport about northeast corner parcel known as "Old Post Office." After some days' argument Davenport built himself a small cabin thereon which still stands today next door to East High School across from Ithaca College's main campus (now Yeshiva University). This particular incident led directly to the founding of Westbury Academy—the very same school now attended by more than 20% of all Upper Hudson Valley students It should be noted that throughout this entire period prior to 1830 whenMount Vernon passed from one owner control onto another without any formal regulation whatsoever it functionsed essentially as an unorganized open air market place where anyone could purchase anything they desired simply by shouting out “I have something you want” thereby giving rise not only à la carte dining but also pseudo souvenirs/trinkets trade fairs whose participants included both village residents and out-of-towners alike including American visitors who would spend weeksEaster visiting various villages along our wonderful route setting off fires pitsMcDonalds restaurants opened up near us during these years right alongside Bethlehem Steel production sites rendering our little hamlet even more inviting for business purposes
Westbury was first settled in 1776 by the Dutch. The area was part of Albany County until 1814, when it became part of Westchester County. In 1825, the county seat was moved to White Plains and the name changed to Westbury-on-Hudson. In 1832, the village of Westbury merged with the town of Suffern to form a single municipality. On July 1, 1901, the town of Suffern dissolved and its residents were annexed into Westbury.
