The town of Westbury grew rapidly after it became part of New York State in 1898. In 1902, it had a population of around 400 people and by 1912 it had reached 1,000 people. In 1915, the first electric streetlight was installed inWestbury center square. The town experienced some trouble during World War II because many residents left for military service or did not have enough money to support themselves while their homes were bombed or destroyed by the war effort. However, overall life continued to improve after the war when more citizens returned home and started businesses such as grocery stores and dry goods stores near central square which continues today as an active commercial district known as "Square One".
Westbury, New York is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester, New York–Buffalo, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westbury is on the west side of the Finger Lakes and has a rich cultural history dating back to the 18th century. The first permanent settlers in what would become Westbury arrived in 1798 and called it "Hardscrabble". In 1822 they changed their name to Westbury because of concerns about being raided by Native Americans. The town was founded on land that had been purchased from the Iroquois by Peter Pequot and his brother-in-law Ezra Cornell in 1785. The townsite consisted of a few villages including Hardscrabble and Watervliet; all were consolidated into one municipality in 1825. The first store opened in Hardscrabble on July 1, 1824. By 1830 there were 424 inhabitants living within a radius of 2 miles (3 km). That year also saw construction begin on what would become the first courthouse in upstate New York – which still stands today and continues to be used as an important legal center for local government. In 1847cnWestbury's first post office opened when two other small villages – Northampton and Southwick – amalgamated into its boundaries. At this time there were only 804 people living within a radius of 4 miles (6 km). However, due to continuous growth over ensuing years much more land was annexed into Westbury until it had an area exceeding 11 square miles (26 sq km). Accordingly, according to its website: "It was not until after World War II that Westbury truly achieved its current stature as an agricultural center with stunning lakeside properties." With its vast tracts of farmland surrounding beautiful water bodies such as Lake Ontario or even Lake Erie - many people refer to Wethersfield as “the most agriculturally diverse town east of Buffalo” - agriculture became one of the primarystay industries hereabouts since independence from Great Britain nearly 150 years ago! The name of the town comes from Westbury-on-Hudson River which is located to the east of the town. The first settlers in what is now Westbury were German farmers who arrived in 1785. They named their new settlement after Mount Hope on Hudson's Bay, which was then part of British Canada. There were no permanent settlers until 1820 when a group of Quakers arrived and began to farm the area around present day Westbury and other parts of Sullivan County. In 1830, James Monroe became President of the United States and decided thatSullivan County should be divided into two parts with Westbury being made its easternmost county seat. This decision solidified agricultural production in western Sullivan County for many years to come and has led to the nickname "The Breadbasket of New York." Although it took some time for people to adjust to life in an all-American society, eventually most residents welcomed Americanization and adopted Western ways. A number of stores and businesses opened up during this time including a general store operated by Nathaniel Weare open from 1829 until his death in 1838; one reason why this store remains an important part of local history today is because it was one of the few stores open during a period when transportation was difficult or impossible to come by. Another early business owner was Elijah Howe who operated a ferry service across the river between Utica and Schenectady for nearly fifty years starting in 1792 before he died in 1840 aged ninety nine years old! In 1868, John Pillsbury opened what would become one of America’s first department stores when he established Pillsburys Department Store on Main Street near where later Today’s Walmart would be built only four decades later!
