In 1812, a man named Elijah Wood purchased an old mill in Westbury, New York from the Bradford family. He renamed it the Elijah Woolen Mill and began to produce cloth for export. In 1827, he opened a second mill in Westbury with his brother-in-law Dr. James Brierly. The business grew rapidly and by 1840, they had two mills producing over 1 million yards of cloth each month. In 1849, Elijah Woolen Mills merged with two other mills to form the American Manufacturing Company. The company became one of the largest textile manufacturers in America and also produced cannons and rifles for the US military during the Civil War. The company went bankrupt in 1863 but continued to operate until 1865 when it was acquired by General Electric Company. During its time as an enterprise, Elijah Woolen Mills was responsible for many advancements within textiles such as developing a machine washable fabric called “Woolies” which became popular during World War II; providing employment opportunities for women throughout America; and creating a standard for quality control in textile production that has been followed ever since.

The society became known as "The Rotary Club" because its meetings were held at various churches around town during rotation periods: Easter Monday through October 10th each year. In 1916, The Rotary Club purchased land northeast of town for use as a recreational park; today's park includes over 4 miles (6 km) of hiking trails and five ponds used for fishing or swimming by locals and visitors alike
