It is the most populous community in Sullivan County and the second-most populous municipality in the county. Westbury's population was 12,519 at the 2010 census. The townseat is based in the center of town and has been since 1892. The first settler in what would become Westbury was Nicholas Carew who arrived on May 30th, 1785 from Rhode Island. He built a log cabin near present day Main Street and Prospect Road after surveys by Nathaniel Greene of Albany showed that there were lands for sale west of Mohawk Creek. On November 3rd, 1795, Peter Minuit donated land to the Town of Westbury for $100 which became its centerpiece - current Main Street. In 1801 John Morse bought 1/4 mile east of present day First Street from Nicholas Carew for $5 per acre along with rights to build a road from his cabin to Saratoga Springs - this became known as Morse Lane today! In 1802 James Prentice founded a flour mill on Dearborn Hill Road south of present day Morse Lane and Indian creek soon followed suit becoming an important source of irrigation water for towns like Westbury and East Aurora up until about 1840 when private wells began being developed throughout much of rural Sullivan County eking out an existence off small local populations with few services or amenities available outside their own communities. These days just one store remains open within three miles (5 kilometers) radius centered around this old mill village while access to all other services has dwindled significantly leaving many residents without basic needs such as healthcare or grocery shopping nearby even though they are now located within easy driving distance for most people! In 1824 Anthony Bemis came to what would become Westbury from Scranton Township where he had been born in 1797. He built a home nearpresent day First Street on land that had previously been part of Dutch Reformed Church on Park Avenue - also still extant today! By 1830 Anthony Bemis' heirs had sold him additional property east of Main Street including King's Landing Cemetery which served as their burial ground until 1865 when it was combined with another cemetery established by investors into one large cemetery about two blocks north called Elmwood Cemetery beginning operations in 1870! Westbury is a small town in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, located on the border of Oneida and Steuben counties. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. Westbury is one of two towns in Oneida County; the other is Elmira. It lies on NY-13, which connects Albany to Buffalo. The village was founded by Col. George Washington and his second wife Martha in 1792 when they took up residence following their removal from Virginia as refugees during the American Revolution. The first settler was John Armstrong who built a Log Cabin near present day Main Street in 1793 and named it after himself, Westbury (changed to Westvile in 1803). In 1795, Colonel Washington's son George Washington sold part of the village for $2 to Nicholas Canfield and his family who then began to build a log house known as "Canfield's Post." Canfield also laid out present day Second Avenue and First Street east of what is today Main Street. In 1814, Stephen Girard purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) northeast of present-day Westbury from Nicholas Canfield for $10 per acre ($1 million at current prices). He named it "Girard's Purchase" after himself and developed it into what is now eastern Steuben County - including much of what would later become westchester County. On July 13, 1825, Girard donated land near modern day Second Avenue/First Street east of Main street to erection of a Baptist church with an orchard adjoining it called "Girard Orphanage". The first pastor was Rev. Samuel Morse who served from 1826 until 1830 when he moved to Rochester where he established an academy which became famous as Mount Holyoke College (now Harvard University). The Village had its peakpopulation around 1800 but declined thereafter due largely to disease brought over by immigrants such as malaria vectors arriving during that time period - especially slave traders bringing slaves across Lake Ontario aboard their ships bound for new markets in South America etc...
