West Haverstraw, New York is a small town located in upstate New York. The population was 3,382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chemung County Consolidated Government. The town is bordered by West Henrietta to the east, Millersburg to the north, and Latham to the west. The history of West Haverstraw goes back over two hundred years. The first settler in what is now West Haverstraw was John Purdy who settled on a farm near what is now North Main Street in 1814. After numerous moves, Purdy finally arrived in 1825 and laid out his plat on which he named "Haverstown." That same year, James Bremner bought land from Purdy and built a home called "Bremner's Farm" on what is now South Main Street. In 1829, Bremner sold his land to John Crouse who laid out a plat which became known as "Crouse's Valley". In 1834, John Wills bought property from Crouse and erected a house on what is now Eastown Road. He named it "Wills' Valley". After many changes of ownership and renaming throughout its lifespan, Wills' Valley eventually came to be known as "West Haverstraw." In 1898, George Washington Smith moved into West Haverstraw with his family after purchasing 640 acres (248 hectares) south of present-day Wethersfield from Amish farmers for $1 per acre (0.50 hectares). At that time there were only about seventy people living in West Haverstaw
