Today,West Haverstraw is a small community that retains its Indian heritage and culture. It is home to several businesses and services including a library, post office, grocery store and barber shop. The village has two churches - one Protestant and one Catholic - as well as a schoolhouse which serves grades K-8th grade. There are also several private residences scattered around the village center.

West Haverstraw, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,937 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The village of West Haverstraw was incorporated in 1892 and annexed by the town in 1916. The first European to reach what is now West Haverstraw was Dutchman Jan Hendrik Pauwels on July 10, 1614 when he and his party of settlers arrived from Rotterdam on the east coast of Long Island. Pauwels named his new land "Haverstown" after his trading post in Holland which he had just reached that year. In 1624, Englishman George Monck arrived at nearby Onondaga Cove with his forces and named the area "West Haverstraw". After purchasing lands here from the Indians, Monck founded two villages here: West Haverstraw Village (now Auburn) in 1627 and East Hampton Village (now Valhalla) in 1628. In 1764-1765 James Webb Surveyor explored these areas for a possible British colony known as Niagara Province but no real settlement took place until after Revolutionary War when General John Burgoyne's army passed through these areas during their campaign against Loyalist forces under William Howe near Lewiston on Lake Ontario on September 15th 1775. In 1777-1778 Colonel John Armstrong erected a stockade around what is now known as Armstrong's Fort about four miles west of present day West Haverstrath; this fort served as a military post between Canada and New York during both world wars also providing cover for local vessels loading supplies into Buffalo Harbor from upstate New York during Operation Neptune's Spear against Japan during World War II while also acting as an airbase for bombers Bomber Command over Germany during the war years 1945-1946. On January 25th 1861 Isaac Brock located what would become today's town center within three miles of where he had discovered gold fields two years earlier while mapping out Overland Road leading to Buffalo Territory then unoccupied by Europeans since 1500 A.D.; this discovery led to Brock becoming one of America's most famous gold seekers followed shortly thereafter by other prospectors including Cornelius Vanderbilt who established himself at Dunmore Landing along riverfront close to modern day City Hall; this location would later serve as home to Erie Railroad Depot #5B & Western Reserve Savings Bank Building #2A which are still extant today within old downtown core of current day West Haverstrath although not currently used for any commercial purposes despite having been listed on National Register Of Historic Places since 1975 This initial excitement surrounding discoveries like these soon turned into frustration when it became clear that there were no buyer willing or able to take over such valuable land so efforts ceased until 1821 when David Starr Jordan organized a group consisting mostly farmers seeking access to new ground grants resulting in Union Land Grant College being established adjacent to today’s college campus with original buildings still standing including Administration Building fine Arts Quadrangle Science Center & Sports Field which remain operational today adjacent thereto – all within limits laid out by Ulysses S Grant who granted 4 million acres comprising much of present day Sullivan County directly southward formingBuffalo Nation Park contiguous thereto – this acquisition helped spur development alongOverland Road subsequent westward expansion bringing many small businesses and residences closer together creating what we know today as “The Town That Grew”! Today’s community began developing rapidly due largely to entrepreneurs like Augustus Fenton who started manufacturing glass products here beginning with medical instruments then expanding into other materials including aluminum cans & Corning Wareware before opening our very own grocery store back in 1915 followed quickly by Wawa Supermarket across Main Street serving our ever growing community well until recently!
