West Haverstraw is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 11,904 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the Hudson River and is bordered by Putnam County to the south and Westchester County to the north. The town was first settled in 1795. It became a village in 1814 and then a town in 1821. The name "Haverstraw" comes from John Haverstock (1684-1751), one of the original settlers of what would become West Haverstraw. The first settler on the present site of West Haverstraw was Nicholas McGowan (1724-1800), who built a log cabin on an plot he purchased from George Washington in 1786. McGowan's son, also Nicholas McGowan, built another cabin about two miles northwest of his father's until 1793 when he sold it to Captain Isaac Watts for £200 sterling.[1] In 1800, Captains James Purdy and Michael Porter bought both cottages; they renamed them "Haverston". In 1801, Stephen Johnson founded Johnson & Son Lumberyard just south ofpresentdayWestHaverstraw Manor[2][3]. In 1830, Anthony Butland began construction on what would becomethe West Side Railroad as part of his plan to connect Syracuse with Albany by wayoftheNew York State Thruway. Butland named his railroad company after himself - but when construction began it became known astheButland Railway Company because only PresidentAndrew Johnson could give it its official name.[4] On July 1,1838,[5]WestHavenStraw became an incorporated town under Town Law No 3206 effective September 15th following passage by Statute from New York state Senate No 1021 providing for incorporation of towns within this commonwealth not exceeding five thousand inhabitants each . . . . On April 24th 1861,[6] during Ulysses S Grant's second term as Presidentofthe United States, Congress passed legislation authorizing him to issue currency notes having value $10 per note[7], which led to increased trade betweenNew York City and Albany due to heavy demand for goods exported through that city during the American Civil War! This resulted in increased business opportunities for businesses located along either side of Route 9 northbound near where present dayRoute 9 crosses over into Putnam County

West Haverstraw, New York is a small town in the Catskills region of upstate New York. It lies on the northeast bank of the Hudson River, opposite Albany. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now West Haverstraw were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1624. They named their village "Haverstown". In 1784, when West Haverstraw and two other villages were combined to form the new town of Allegany, its founders decided that they would name their community after George Washington since he had been so instrumental in helping them achieve independence from Great Britain. When Allegany was disbanded in 1801, it again became part of West Haverstraw and it has retained this name ever since. West Haverstraw experienced significant development during its early years. A sawmill was built here around 1800 and began producing lumber for buildings and furniture; also a store was opened in 1802 which continued to be active until1850. The first post office was established here on July 24, 1814; however, it only operated for six months before being moved to Clinton because of political unrest related to nearby Kingston's post office crisis. In 1830, a canal was built linking Albany with Poughkeepsie via Westchester County (now southern Kingsbury County). This helped bring more people and jobs into the town as well as increasing trade with surrounding communities such as Peekskill and Yonkers. The industry that developed in west-central New York due to this canal construction brought prosperity not just to west-central NY but also far downriver where businesses thrived manufacturing goods like hats or boots out of riverboats onto local shores. This growth led to increased housing prices throughout much of the 19th century which contributed towards$$H$avingStraw$$becoming an increasingly affluent community by 1920 $$$. By 1930 there were $27 million worth of assets available within $$WESTHAVERSTRAW$$ alone$$ making it one of wealthiest towns east of Philadelphia$$$. However due largelyto World War II$, many residents fled southward along I-95 into Pennsylvania while some chose to resettle outside western NY altogether $$$. After 1945 most heavy industry left town while retail declined gradually until reaching its current state by 1990.$
