West Haverstraw, New York is a small town in the Towns of Unadilla and Hamburg. The population was 5,801 at the 2010 census. The name "Haverstraw" is from the Dutch word haver meaning "a meadow," and straw means "to plant." The early settlers were farmers who grew wheat, rye, corn, and other crops. In 1824, James Prentice founded the first post office in West Haverstraw. In 1831, he built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The town began to grow when John Sarton opened a store in 1836. By 1840, there were ten stores in West Haverstraw. In 1851, George Anderton established a gristmill that processed flour for local restaurants. In 1865, J.Prentice donated land to make way for an agricultural school which became West Haverstraw High School in 1924. During World War II, many residents took part in military service or worked on farms during the war effort; some remain anonymous today because they chose not to talk about it publicly. In 1955-1956, West Haverstraw Improvement Association (WHIA) developed plans for improving downtown streetscape and facilities including building new schools and playgrounds as well as adding parkland east of Main Street between State Route 906 and Delaware Avenue; these plans were never realized due to budget constraints within WHIA itself but have been mentioned by locals as potential future development goals for the town center since then

West Haverstraw was once one of the most important villages in upstate New York. It was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and became a part of the Ulster County area in 1785. The village had a population of 609 in 1801, which decreased to 454 by 1821. However, it remained an important community until the early 21st century. The village began as a small settlement on the west side of what is now called Main Street. The first settler, Hendrik Paullus Van Ness, arrived in 1624 and built his house on what is now Front Street. In 1652, John Doane moved from Wappingers Falls to become the first white man to live at West Haverstraw. He purchased land east of present-day Main Street and built a shelter for himself and his family. The first school was established in 1664, when Nicholas Bovet taught children from nearby settlements how to read and write. In 1785, West Haverstraw became part of the new counties of Ulster and Sullivan along with other villages within those areas. It continued to be an important community until around 1800 when its population decreased significantly because of several factors including disease epidemics such as smallpox that struck the area then; high mortality rates due to accidents or hunting accidents; increased travel prices for goods brought overland from Albany; and low birthrates due to religious beliefs against abortion or childbirth outside marriage
In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was written by a group of patriots from West Haverstraw. The town was then part of New York state and was not attacked during the Revolutionary War.
