It lies on the east side of the Long Island Sound and is bordered by Sayville to the north, Northport to the east, Fresh Meadows to the south and Hicksville to the west. The first Europeans who set foot in what is now West Haverstraw were Dutch settlers from South Holland in 1624. They named their settlement after a small stream that flowed through their land. In 1784, English colonists arrived and began farming this area. The town of West Haverstraw was established in 1814. The first post office was established in 1819 and services continued until 1959. In 1922, an air traffic control tower was built along with other facilities including a school and a garage for trucks and cars. Today, West Haverstraw is known for its agriculture industry which includes hay production, produce production and dairy products such as milk and cheese. There are also businesses such as a library (established in 1954), several churches (including one Roman Catholic parish) and two schools (grades K-8).

West Haverstraw was a village in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneonta–Onondaga, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now West Haverstraw was Dutchman Hendrick Van Swalen on November 12, 1614 while exploring the area for possible trade with the Iroquois. He named it "Haverstraw" after his home town of Haversham in England and founded a trading post there on December 20, 1614. In 1795 George Washington came through this area for his military campaigns against Great Britain. In 1805–1809 he propounded an idea to build a road from Canada to Albany via West Haverstraw and then upriver to Syracuse but this proposal died without any action taken by either side. A schoolhouse was built in West Haverstraw in 1823 by Reverend Ebenezer Moore and additions were made over time until it reached its present condition as a historic structure on Main Street in 1910. A fire destroyed much of the village center in 1930 but most of what remain today date back to that year. An annual agricultural fair is held at which local farmers sell their products such as apples, eggs, milk and other dairy products; vegetables; hay; beef; horses; horses’ saddles and harnesses; feathers; carpets and rugs; beads and other handcrafts
