West Haverstraw, New York is a small town located in central New York. It has a population of approximately 5,000 people and the median household income is $50,000. The town was founded in 1838 by George Washington Carver and his wife Catharine Carver. West Haverstraw is home to the Carver Museum of Art and the nearby Thalheimer-Frye House. In 1914, West Haverstraw became the first town in New York State to adopt an ordinance authorizing women to vote. In 1935, West Haverstraw became the last town in New York State to establish a school board. In 1945, West Haverstraw became home to World War II veterans’ housing units known as "Havens". Havens were designed by starchitect Philip Johnson and built on land that had been used for agricultural purposes since 1647. West Haverstraw is a village in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1786 by the Dutch farmers Blind Joris and Pieter van der Velde. West Haverstraw is located on the north bank of the Raritan River. The village name was derived from "Haverstraw" (a place in Holland), which means "bridge over the Raritan." In 1812, when Sullivan County was created from parts of Ulster and New York City, West Haverstraw became part of what would become Orange Township. The first post office in West Haverstraw opened in 1814. In 1898, East Orange merged with West Haverstraw to form what would remain Orange Township until its dissolution in 1955. On October 10, 1957, Hurricane Eddy struck Long Island as a Category 5 hurricane with winds up to 195 mph (320 km/h). Overall damage amounted to $2 million ($53 million today) and 150 deaths were reported statewide; however most fatalities occurred on the Island of Long Island proper where much ofbuildings were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. The town of East Orange had already been removed from its eastern border by then due to flooding caused by Hurricane Floyd two years earlier and so no official warning or evacuation orders were given to residents living west of Route 9 either; unfortunately many did not heed these pleas for fear that they would be forced into evacuate their homes if East Orange fell victim too. A few days after landfall there was widespread panic as people could still hear thundering storm sounds miles away despite having lost all power and communication with any nearby communities! The only way to verify that everything had actually happened as expected was for emergency services helicopter pilots flying overhead to fly spotters along both banks of the river below- checking for any signs that villages like West Haverstradt and Springdale may have physically moved or disappeared beneath swollen riverside beds! Unfortunately this never happened as very little wreckage could be found anywhere near those communities- all evidence pointed towards an intense tornado outbreak that affected much wider areas across upstate New York! This particular catastrophe has long been seen as one of America's worst natural disasters ever - serving as a reminder why it is important for everyone who live within Tornado Alley- including children playing outside- take precautions against being caught unawares next time something like this happens!
