West Haverstraw is a small town located in the Catskills of New York. It was once a thriving agricultural community with large herds of cows, pigs, and horses. By 1801, there were only about 25 people living in the town. In 1815, John Marsland arrived and began to build a house on what is now Main Street. He named his home "Haverstraw" after his family's farm near Hawick in Scotland. By 1830, only 10 people lived in West Haverstraw; most of these were farmers who raised livestock or bought land from Marsland for farming purposes. In 1847, George Witherspoon came to live in West Haverstraw and started a grocery store on Third Street which would later become one of the largest grocery stores west of the Alleghenys River. Not long after he opened his store, Witherspoon met two other men who would play an important role in the development of westchester County: Ichabod Crane and Solomon Northup. Crane became president of Trustee Company #1 (later Rockefeller Brothers) while Northup became one ofthe first settlers on Long Island when he purchased 640 acres north of Hicksville from Sir John Moorehead for $8 per acre (about $30 per square mile). Northup also developed what is now East Elmhurst into a residential area which included much property that still stands today including parts of Main Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue South

West Haverstraw is a small town in central New York, United States. The population was 1,514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1664, Dutch settlers founded West Haverstraw on the west bank of the Niagara River some twenty miles upstream from present-day Niagara Falls. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1768 had a population of 2,000 people. By 1792, when it became a separate town, West Haverstraw had an estimated population of 10,000 people and was one of the most populous towns in New York State. In 1814, when Niagara County was created from parts of Erie and Ontario counties, West Haverstraw became its third county seat. The village continued to grow until 1956 when it merged with nearby Rochester to form the current city of Buffalo–Niagara Falls
West Haverstraw was first settled in 1785 by James West. He and his wife, Susannah, founded a small town on the west bank of the Haverstraw River. The town grew slowly but steadily over the next century, thanks to its river access and good soil. In 1809, WestHaverstraw became a state town and remained so until 1959.
